How do you carry your big knives?

How about some examples (pics appreciated) of how to carry the bigger blades? I'm 5'8" and if I tried to carry my FSH in a traditional belt sheath I'd have the butt in my armpit before I cleared the sheath!

I do have several ideas, but would much rather hear from those who have "been there and done that", plus I haven't really seen much on this. Seems like it would be a pretty interesting thread.

I know some of you have some pretty slick rigs, so how about doing a little show and tell? Show us what you've got and how you wear it, and tell us what you think, or would do differently next time.

JSP Bladerigger Executive harness holds the blade upside down and facing the rear for an inverted reverse grip draw.

I don’t like wearing a knife down on my leg, especially if I’m riding a horse. So I wear all of mine high and cross draw.

Are we talking in the field, or concealed carry, or what?

Big knives work great when you treat 'em like a sword and wear it crossdraw (as the previous message mentions). You can even wear them that way on a shoulder strap, and conserve your belt space. That allows you freedom to move it where you want it while you're carrying it.

"Swinger" sheaths help too (like the sheaths that come with Western bowies).

I like mid ride height sheaths (half the handle above the belt) on my strong side. Seeing as I am 184 cm tall this works fine for me.

This is a good thread. Ian, can you post flip side photos of your cross draw rigs? At what angle do you cross draw folks like the knife to hang?

dwmanz- can you post a pic or link? I think I'm picturing upside down and rear facing- until I try to put it together with an inverted reverse grip- then I lose the picture.

Ian- As HenryIV said- angles? horizontal cross draw? are you a lefty? Nice set, by the way, thanks for the pics!

rhino- I'm thinking hiking to moderate (very) climbing and camping.

I like the cross draw idea, but would it be possible to do an ambi set-up with about a 45 degree angle? Anyone favor a dangler and strap to the thigh?

How tall is dat boy? I kint till nun of dat european crap sentmeter stuff. Tell me in Inches boy:eek:

Seriously though, I like blades that ride higher as well or inside the pants (which is out of the question with a big knife). Something like a steel heart in cross draw is good. Leatherman is customizing a sheath for multiple carry for me right now.

Dundee rigs work well as well. Armpit style shoulder rigs work well also, but with a BM you better have a long torso.

I wear my SH Variant on a drop rig from Okuden on my left leg. A drop rig on my right for my pistol. I usually tuck my SHBM in my Camelback in the spare resovoir (sp) pocket along with my larger survival kit. I'm only 5'8" 150lbs so my options are limited also. Shoulder rigs are great as long as you don't need to carry a pack or wear a vest.

He will finish yours up once mine are done. :grumpy: :D

I'm 5'8" and the biggest blade I have is a SH, and I carry it in a Kenny Rowe high rise sheath. It's a little more difficult to pull it, but it's not in the way when I sit down.

184 cm = just over 6 foot.
