How do you carry your Gunting?

OK, I'm pretty sure I know the benefits of the Gunting. The blade size, the design, they're all excellent. Thank you to Bram and thank you to Spyderco for making so many great knives in 3" blade lengths for us unfortunate Californians (I will not rant on this post, really...).

So here we go, the kydex pocket sheaths look great, the Vess leather sheaths look great, the kydex Survival Sheaths look incredible and even come with tek-lok.

(as seen on gunting-museum.com, survivalsheath.com, and ebay, not to mention
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307039)

But once again I live in California and would eventually need to take my jacket off, and my pockets are pretty full already without taking up another pocket. Anyone carry any other way? The Guntings ride high in the pocket which could attract attention and seem to eat clothes so I'd prefer not to do that.

Has anyone had success with a EDC of a Gunting without a belt sheath? I stumbled onto this site (http://www.frontiernet.net/~akim/pkc.htm) with a leather pocket sheath and was thinking of trying that. I might even consider a removable belt or inside waistband carry along the lines of a paddle holster but I have not seen a good example of such a thing. Any ideas or better yet, pics?

...Although I gotta say it was killer seeing Simona and Bram and all running around Prague with Guntings strapped to their sides.

no longer have a gunting but when i did i used a skunkworks belt sheath which worked pretty good (they are outta biz now IIRC) tried carrying in pocket but it didnt work well, unless the pivot was tight (too tight for me) it would open up in your pocket, i would either

A) tighten the heck outta it and carry in pocket, or

B) get a good belt or pocketsheath

Hmm, if you don't want to wear it on the belt, and your pockets are full, I am not sure what you are asking. Try a vest for the times you do want to remove the jacket. Try pants with more pockets, or roomier pockets. Take a look at the synthetic pocket holsters sold by Uncle Mikes, a.k.a. Michaels of Oregon, if I recall correctly. I use a belt sheath almost all the time, and occasionally clip a Gunting into the right front pocket or the "watch pocket" located within or above the right front pocket of some jeans and other pants. Usually, the Gunting is visible to the public, and I have not started any stampedes. It takes a certain level of commitment to carry a Gunting. If I can carry a Gunting every day, plus a pistol and spare ammunition, along with other sharp toys, then you can probably handle carrying just a Gunting or two.

I carry a Gunting (mostly on weekends) and like the knife a lot, but I just had to note that California does not have any blade length restrictions on either folding or fixed blade knives, unless they are switchblades (which must be less than 2 inches). California has many bad points, but knife laws aren't one of them.

Back to topic: I often wear Royal Robbins 5.11 tactical pants that have very WIDE belt loops (wide horizontally, I mean). I can jam the Gunting into the belt loop and it is held in very securely - it's basically a free horizontal sheath. The 5.11 pants also have a fabric "loop" across the right back pocket that you can clip a Gunting to. For other pants, I've clipped it to the waistband or the pocket, but I'm more likely to carry it in a jacket pocket if I'm not wearing the 5.11s. I just sent Vess an inquiry about a Gunting sheath, and am leaning towards a horizontal orientation, so it's not quite so visible.

I only have one sheath, from Martin Muller of Gunting-museum.com. It is just like the skunkworks one, and I do wear it with several pants. Usually, though, I wear it in my pocket. I keep my wallet in the same pocket, and have not had a problem, though I am really careful. When I was in LA, I carried it for the 5 days I was there, and got no funny looks. I don't often wear jeans; instead I wear pants with slash pockets-cargo pants, other work pants-i.e. carpenters pants, and my pants are pretty big. I know it is not the easiest knife to carry, but it is hardly as difficult as some think. If you decide to go with a holster, Check out Bob H's-he's got several designs that he will wend you via email, Martin's on his site, or vess's which are gorgeous leather. Good luck, Joe

You can try IWB as well, I had to during my brother's wedding. It is not terribly comfortable, but you may be able to get used to it.

I carry mine in Vess leather sheaths, horz. or vertical. Used to have a Pocket Kydex from Mike Sastre. Love Vess leather. Have a few for sale & some kydex belt sheaths. Contact Vess he has some EXOTICS for the G. You won't be disappointed ,he's a great guy to work with.
Be safe,
Jim

Robert Humelbaugh of Survival Sheath Systems as some REALLY nice shoulder rigs. Take a look around his site for ideas, and give him a call.

He does all custom work, so he can make it happen just about any way you want it.

I have numerous Gunting sheaths but my most used are the original skunkworks sheaths.

I live in a tropical country and almost never wear a jacket.
I also work in the Stock Exchange, a restricted area. I thus need to carry discreetly.

Gunting works and carries best from belt sheath, there's no question there.
But with no jacket to cover, your G will be exposed and easy to see.

Shove it IWB, and if it isn't screwed tight, it will open easy and castrate you.

I have an inside pocket sheath for the G from Rivercitysheaths which is OK, but I usually carry a lot of stuff in my pockets(remember, tropical country--no jackets), wallet, key pouch, etc. It doesn't fit in easy.

It just doesn't work as fast as from a pocket, IWB, or sheath.

So sadly, I don't carry the G, although I think it is a very good folder, one of the best I have ever handled, for self-defence purposes. It is now working as my wife's letter-opener.

It may be possible to clip the Gunting IWB, with the pivot pin screwed tight, BEHIND your handphone that is clipped in pouch on your belt.

This may conceal your high-riding G nicely, but so far I have not tried it.

But in the end, you need to carry the G in a sheath if you are going to carry it everyday, or have some kind of "special" pocket for it. If you look at Bram's video's you'll see him in trousers with horizontal pockets on the side of his legs, you get the idea.

Good luck.

California has many bad points, but knife laws aren't one of them.

Municipalities sometimes have laws, whether they are enforceable or not and wheher LEO are familiar are other matters. Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco are examples where they have laws on the books stating knives with 3 inch blades are longer are considered dangerous weapons and could be considered misdemeanors under certain circumstances. Most of the cities above also consider "spring blades" of any size dangerous weapons. So much for the "California Specials".

At this point I carry a knife over 3 inches to and from work (which is for some reason better). but avoid it at other times. The Gunting fits the bill in this respect but it still doesn't mean I can carry it openly without issues.

If I carry a defensive knife I need to be familiar with it and have it on me as much as practically possible so this is where my dilemma is.

Perhaps Spyderco could come out with a stylish (yet tactical) blue blazer to aid in concealment?

Nice idea about adapting the pocket holster to house a Gunting Will it keep me safe from potential castration as indicated above? Anyone tried this?

...mine in my RH pocket, right behind my wallet. When I go out, I clip it to my RH pocket, just the way Bram designed it... :D

The wallet keeps the G upright and in place, and still makes it easy to access. However, I am a bit of a gadgeteer, so I make sure that the thing is screwed down pretty tight. Again, just the way Bram designed it...

I have never had an inadvertent opening with the G in the 1.5 years I have carried it.

I would not carry it loose in the pocket, however, that is asking for trouble.
