how do you carry your khukri?

I searched around a bit looking for a thread about this and didnt find anything...

I was camping and I was usink my 18in CAK to bring some firewood down to kindling size, and I put the khuk on my belt on the left side and would draw it with my right hand, but it seemed a little awkward drawing and putting it up, and it was really pulling my pants down on one side.

so I was wondering how do you guys carry your bigger blades in situations like that, not walking very far but needing your hands to carry wood or whatever.

I was thinking a bandolier of sorts... but couldnt think of how I could make that work and not be awkward.

just curious about what you guys do to solve this problem?

An old USGI pistol belt accomodates the HI-sized frog like it was meant to be there. Stick something opposite it (canteen, pistol, whatever) to balance the load.

After a certain size and weight of khukuri you're going to need suspenders of some sort to keep your trousers from getting yanked down. This is another one of the reasons why I favor khukuries in the 15-16" and 20-24 ounce size range.

I've never fooled with a baldric but there's no reason why that wouldn't work.

i use a nylon luggage strap with metal clips on either end that i can fasten to 2 steel rings that are on a carabiner run thru the frog belt loop. see kobra in picture:

An excellent thread. Thanks!

I, too, pray for some more detailed discussion on this topic, including pictures.

I sometimes think there's a silent majority out here who aren't exactly certain how to carry their rigs into the forest, the back yard, even. Me included. So, thanks in advance!

Big fan of Leatherface, but last I checked, his page wasn't working. Any updates?

The only HI product I have so far is the stick knife I recently purchased (still looking for a viable replacement sheath!).

But, I have a BR Golok, a similar large blade (if not quite as heavy as some of the HI stuff). I did something similar as you, I took the nylon strap off a camera bag, ran two caribiners through the holes in the BR leather sheath, and now I sling the whole thing over the shoulder. It carries high and tight this way, and is available to either hand.

If I don't want it to move around, I clip it to a belt loop using another caribiner, sort of a sam brown arrangement.

I carry them in my teeth like a pirate. Arrrrgh!:D

Actually, I don't carry them much at all. My khuks are usually carried to the site, used, and carried back. If i do pack them, the long ones get lashed to the side of my pack. This makes them easy to get to in a pinch as well as easy to hide from sheeple with a sock or piece of canvas over the handle. The little knives and 12" khuks just get carried on my belt. The one exception to the rule is my very first khuk, a 15" Kumar villager in a handmade leather quick draw sheath. The fit came out so well, that it just begs to hang from the hip.

Actually, I have a hasiya with a similar rig that is also a joy for hip carry...but that's a little more a specialty blade used for helping my mom with yard work out her house;)

whats wrong with good ol fashioned sash carry?
its tried and true so i say go out and buy a sash  j/k

i carry it on a pistol belt hung left drawn with my right hand... very comfortable for me

you can counterbalance it as posted above with a canteen... or another khukuri :D

WOOHOO I have a FAN!!! Glad to hear it bro

yea the page is working just fine...Server was down for a bit of maintenance the other day...That was prolly the problem

that or I had it offline for updates etc...I cant remember the outside anymore:confused:

BUT we are back!!!:D

Anywho...I tend to carry my 15" AK in a quick draw sheath (Steve has one that is like it but his is tooled and much prettier) ...I use a thick 2" belt that I to tote it around (It also carries my herp gear)...Wont work with some pants but the ones I knock around in it works fine...I dont carry my AK as much as I would like (I use it for house play) but when I do it is either in a crossdraw rig or a quickdraw

I plan on making a kydex sheath for it one of these days....Ahh where does the time go?

Pictures? I can do pictures.

Here's a shot from a few years ago. You can just see the scabbard hanging on my left side. This arrangement is quite good enough for knocking around in the woods; I never had a problem, even while entering/exiting vehicles, running, or climbing. The scabbard/khukuri combination cannot be too large and heavy for this to work properly though. Pictured is a 17" Foxy Folly, which is not too large and is certainly not heavy. Beyond 18-20" is where I find things to get in the way.

Any larger and things can be a hassle. When we get up to the larger khukuries, a belt carry is still possible if it's cinched tightly enough but the scabbard itself tends to get in the way.

(I'm 6'2", in case you're wondering how large that khukuri is.)

If you have an LBV that attaches to the belt, things are even better -- if the weight on the belt exceeds its capacity to stay up, the load simply shifts to your shoulders and your trousers remain in the upright position, which is generally where I prefer mine to be while tromping around in the great outdoors. This doesn't have to be anything fancy; just about any milsurp USGI LBV or suspenders has loops to attach to a pistol belt. You also gain a bunch of pockets to cram full of stuff that you'll never need if you're anything like me. (Sorry, no pics of this.)

I have a drop thigh extender for the M12 holster around here someplace; on a whim I threaded the strap through a scabbard's frog instead of a holster just to see how it would work. It sorta worked, sorta didn't. Had I tied down the chape it would have been great. I didn't feel like experimenting further and it interfered with a pistol on the strong side, and the pistol took precedence for obvious reasons. I stuck with the weak side belt carry. (Again, sorry, no pics of this.)

Foxy Folly
One of the top 5 HI khuks in my opinion.

i want to see more foxies... esp a couple big ones :)

perhaps a karambait/ycs-karda/big-foxy combo :) yes. call it the "J Foxy" :>

My only HI possession right now isn't a khukri (or is it??) but a stick knife. It's pretty beefy, 15" blade, but over 30 ozs. in weight.

I didn't like the scabbard, but I looked over some of the pics in this thread, and saw the one where the guy sort of tied his blade into its scabbard, secured it so he could carry it on his belt.

That got me to thinking... I went out into the garage and looked around a bit, and came up with an orange loop bungy, the kind with the hard plastic ball on one end, about eight inches long.

I looped that around the scabbard and blade a couple of times and secured it. Worked perfectly! Then had the bright idea of getting my brand new BR&T ELK in its leather pouch sheath, and latched that onto the scabbard as well.. worked perfectly!

I'm no longer so grumpy about the loose scabbard fit, all better now.

I used the stick knife again today to chop down some 2"-3" diameter scrub oaks that had grown up into our property fence. It worked great, of course. I like it as a tool better than most of the hatchets I have had in my life.

so it sounds like the pistol belt is the way to go... or at least a better option then my normal pants belt...

i'll prolly swing by one of the military surplus stores around town and snag one for the camping trip this weekend...

I meant to answer this question a while back . I have been trying to develop a cross draw sheath/belt . This is to hold the the sheath in a crosswise fashion as opposed to letting it more or less dangle .

It was also suggested to help me with a left handed draw . It doesn,t seem to be working for me . I mostly carry it from a plain leather belt until I get a handle on my needs .
