How do you carry your SD folder ?

I posted this question on the EDC tread; I think all of you knife scholars on this forum can help me out.

First of what I need a folder for.

I have carried a fixed blade for defensive purposes and utilitarian tasks almost all my life; I depend on it as a weapon mostly. In some cases a fixed blade is just not an option because of discretion, and counseling a fixed blade makes it slower when it comes to presenting it. A folder is faster in this case.

I carry my knives on my weak left side, mostly on my belt or pocket when the blade is small. I have never carried a folder so opening a knife whit my left hand is kind of uncomfortable, I think repetition and training is what I need to get pase this.

So what has helped you out when it comes to folder?
Do lanyards help? Does the thumb stud work or should I try a wave modification?

Any help is welcomed as always. :o

I'm not a big fan of lanyards on a folder intended for SD, I've had a few instances where I went to open the knife for just utility use, and the lanyard snagged and hung up on the blade tip and kept the knife from opening all the way.

Tucked into outside left rear pocket, nestled next to wallet. Tip up. I've never used a clip. The knives I've carried that had a clip, I've removed it.

clipped into my right rear pocket, that exact knife actually, 860 bedlam manual, no lanyard on mine though.

Hey I currently care a Benchmade BEdlam :). I carry it between 3 and 6 o'clock, or right behind my right hip, you could do it for the left hip too though. It conceals very well and I have practiced enough to draw within 1 second and a half, great blade :D

If it doesn't have a flipper or is assisted opening then a Wave mod for sure.

Edwood, knowing you from the EDC thread, and your need, here's my opinion based on personal choice.

I carry 3 folders, 2 IWB at 10 and 2 o'clock, one at either IWB @ 3.5 (just behind my cellphone pouch) or right front pocket. Tip up & tip down depending on the knife model it is. Tried using zip tie wave on some, with practice it opens well right out of pocket.

In your need as weapon and not always defensive one, waved, tip down right front pocket or left (if the clip is switchable) is best. lots of practice to build muscle memory of pulling it out with pressure to the wave against pocket seam.

If concealed move as if reaching wallet is considered, then right back pocket but the wave will be facing the wallet & not pocket seam. This orientation is best to get the grip goiing (forward grip). Being axis, you can just flick it right along when swing your arm forward & up. Or, reverse grip edge out is planned, this way you can put the wave against the seam, not wallet. This is one smoother movement.

For defensive use, mercops' IWB IET approach is best.

No lanyard, it gets in the way in my daily use.

Question: are you going to deploy & use it same as the role of your fixed blade? It's important to consider habt built over years & incorporated into your fighting style.
Try some variations, find one that blends closest to your fighting style.

Stay safe.
(PS: many of good practical tips over Practical Tactical subforum)

Yes it is going to be used for the same purpose that I carry my fixed blades, offensive and defensive. I will post the question on the practical tactical sub forum later on, but I always get a better response on this forum. (There are a lot of ninjas and trolls on the prac. Tac. forum:o)

I'm left-handed. I carry my ZT 0200 on my left side, just above (but slightly forward) of my back pocket. I carry my ZT 0200 in a Leatherman (size II) nylon belt sheath in the horizontal position, spine-up in the sheath.

Clipped to strong side front pocket, and find a way to wave it, for bms take out the thumbstud with a torx driver and slip a ziptie through it, still functions as a thumbstud but acts as a wave feature as well

Good idea.

Note that the thumbstud will no longer be ambidextrous, but you can choose which side it is on

That makes me want to get a bedlam more now because I was concerned about not being able to get it out quickly.

Right front pocket, don't carry anything else in that pocket. Practice drawing the knife and deploying the blade. It's an exercise that will take muscle memorization and coordination. Once you get it, it's scary how fast you can pull and deploy your folder.

I keep an HAK on my keys where I can whip it out quickly. Keys are in my back pocket where most people keep their wallet. It's really one of those last ditch things where I'm pretty much toast anyway

I carry right front waved with left hand clip placement.

This vid will show all ways.

I carry mine tip-up in my strong side pocket, with the spine against the rear seam. I use a short, stiff lanyard made of triple knotted doubled up leather boot lace. The lanyard is short and stiff enough to not be able to hang up on the blade tip, but has a big knot which makes pocket extraction rather easier.

Fixed blade for self-defence, folder for everything else. Fixed blade behind right hip in a kydex sheath.

I dont think folders are ideal for self-defence and I tend to rotate my folders quite a bit so its not ideal...

If I do get lazy and neglect to carry a fixed blade I carry my Crawford Kasper in my right front pocket. Always the right front pocket.

Edwood, yeah many trolls there, but also some genuine practitioner :) albeit it sometimes really hard to find the gems.

If no guns, the maybe you'd like strong side front pocket, tip up waved (or zip tied, but real wave is more effective). If you have gun, then weakside, same setup.

This is with the bedlam you have currently, judging from the size & shape. I don't have one though ;)

Practice is key to ensure the wave feature works 100%.
