How do you carry your traditional knives?

I love traditional knives and have several of them but I so rarely get to carry them! My current pair of jeans only has the standard two front pockets and two rear pockets. My right front pocket gets keys and flashlight, my left front pocket gets my phone, my right rear is for wallet and rear left is cleaning cloth and comb. I usually just carry a mini-Grip or other clipped folder to my right front pocket but I'd really like to start keeping a traditional on me.
I'd really like to just find a horizontal belt sheath but there certainly aren't many available that aren't specifically designed for a specific knife that I can find. I'm thinking I'd just like a single sheath to carry whichever knife I want to carry that day and since all of mine are under 4" in total length I figured it would be a breeze to find. I found one that I really liked but it is out of stock and I don't know when/if it will ever come back in stock. I'd be fine with a vertical sheath too but, I guess I'm just curious to see how everyone else carries their traditional knives. Do you just pocket carry and not worry about everything getting scratched up? Do you have a horizontal/vertical universal or custom sheath? Pocket slip? Let's see pictures and hear some unusual ideas!

I fold my handkerchief up several times into about a 4" square, place the knife diagonally on the square, fold the corners over to make a triangle, and slip it into my front pocket. It pads the knife a little and keeps it from wearing a hole in my pocket. Nothing else rides in that pocket but the knife and kerchief.

That's a great idea! If I had a front pocket free I could see that working well but, I don't really want my keys and flashlight or my phone to have to move to a back pocket or in my bag since I sometimes leave my bag in my car.

Lets see, today I had a total of 5 bladed implements on me. 3 slipjoints, a multitool, and a keychain sized non-traditional.

Victorinox Alox Classic, bottom of front right pocket. Dockers have a little internal change pocket at the bottom of the pocket, perfect for a flat light knife like the Vic. Pocket shared with a phone and comb. Keychain-sized non-traditional clipped to the pocket used as a dangler for a small flashlight.

Case Sod Buster Jr, Amber Bone scales, bottom/side of right back pocket, along with a thin Moleskine-brand notepad. The bone-handled Sod Buster Jrs are very flat and lay in there just fine either beside the notepad or in the bottom of the pocket.

Case Peanut. Left rear pocket along side or underneath wallet.

Front left pocket contained keys, change, and small Leatherman multitool.

So essentially I carry my pocket knives in my pockets. In general, the keys/change pocket doesn't contain a knife and the knives all share pockets with non-abrasive things so they don't get too scratched up, but I'm not fanatical about it.

Weekends I will usually upgrade the Peanut to something larger, typically a stockman or trapper pattern of some sort. Same pockets for everything.

I use the large courier belt sheath by knives ship free it can carry up to 4 1/2" OAL, I am thinking of purchasing a cross draw sheath for a smaller option.
I'm really short for my age.. :D

That's the one that I wanted, Rappy, but it's out of stock and I don't know when they'll be back in. It seems like such a good idea for a belt sheath so I'm confused why there aren't a bunch more in a similar design out there for sale!

It rides really well all day no discomfort, leather came stiff so I rubbed oil into the leather, helps to loop the belt on.
They should have more in stock soon, probably ask Okbohn here when they'll have more.

Why don't you try making your own .
There is a huge amount of info here in the sheaths and leather forum , and YouTube is a great resource .
It's not that hard to do , minimal tools are required and its a great hobby to get into . Why not spend to those long winter nights making yourself exactly what you want , instead of just buying and choosing from a limited selection of what's available in a shop .
Have a go its great fun :)

Right front pocket for the traditional knife, where it rides by itself.
(flashlight goes in the shirt pocket.)

I usually have two traditional pocket knives on me. The primary knife is usually a 3.5" (closed) which goes in my RFP and usually is solo there with no other items. My secondary pocket knife is a Peanut that rides in the small watch pocket in the right front. I also carry an SAK Farmer in a horizontal sheath (custom made by a friend) behind my hip on my right side.

If you like KSF's horizontal sheath contact them and inquire about when they'll become available again. As said above you can make one yourself or have a local leather maker craft one for you.

Many here make a slip for their knife out of the finger of an old leather glove. Drop the knife into this and then carry it in your pocket this way. This allows the knife to accompany other items in your pocket without concern for it being scratched up by coins, etc.

This topic comes up from time to time :)

Well, I use to carry one or two knives; mostly at the closed length of 2.75 - 4.25 inches. I do not carry an of them at a belt pouch, except they are too heavy for pocket, like the mighty Buck 110/112. They get carried in their belt sheaths.

I carry them in one of front pockets with all the other stuff, like keys, coins, other knives or whatever.

It is sometimes a little bulky. But that´s ok for me. I usually don´t need any quick access to my knives so I also the time for some search in the depths of my pockets ;)

I don´t worry about scratches or dings. It is a tool and it doesn´t have any influence on the function.

I wear Wrangler Pro-Rodeo jeans most everyday (decent size pockets); pocketknife (up to 4") drops into the bottom of my LFP, i-phone (in OtterBox) slides down on top. Keys, change, etc., goes into the RFP. Wallet and hankerchief are each in one of the two back pockets - that's it. OH

This is just about how I do too. The major difference is that I carry a second knife in my watch pocket. Lately, I've been trying to carry my main knife in my back left pocket with my handkerchief. I say trying because when I use it I have to consciously remind myself to put it in the back pocket or it ends up in the LFP again.

Why not try dropping a traditional in your back pocket with your cleaning cloth and comb? Or you can put it up front with your phone if you have room in that pocket. I guess it depends on what kind of pants you're wearing and what kind of knife you're carrying.

I carry an EDC always in the smal right front pocket, a SAK Alox pioneer, Buck 303, small Barlow or Peanut.

The bigger one folds in the handkerchief in my vest in winter, that can be anything up to 3 1/2 inches, for legal reasons. I like a Laguiole, large Trapper or a Canoe.

While working there's the possibility of a belt knife like a Mora, but also folders like the Buck 110 or a Jumbo trapper.

Axes are not worn on the belt, I don't like too much weight on it, keep it in the toolbox.

I'll try the handkerchief trick!
The pocket clip spoiled me but I'm going to try to carry my AGR Cowboy in a nylon belt pouch.

I usually carry a smaller blade and a larger blade on me at all times. My Stockman either goes in my right front pocket or my fifth pocket if the jean I am wearing have one that is deep enough.

For my new GEC, which is a larger Trader, I plan on making either a belt sheath or a back pocket sheath like you see for Buck 110s. Currently, it's riding in my pocket above my Stockman in a cheap leather pocket clip that came with a RR I purchased last week. Nice design. I might make one like it that is a little more substantial.

At a pinch, try an army-navy, surplus, or outdoor store, and look over the variously sized belt-carry pockets and holsters for cell phones and similar items. These are all black cordura nylon, so not much to look at, and they use noisy velcro, but you can probably find a horizontal carry holster among them.
