How do you choose...

I always have trouble choosing which one of my big boys (2/4/7/9) to bring with me when I head out to the woods, do some yard work, build a fire, or whatever I need a big knife for. I find it a little unnecessary to bring more than one as they will all do everything I need them to do.
What are some considerations you guys take when deciding which knife to take out for the day? Do you have a certain one that stays in the car or garage or somewhere? Or do you just change it up with no reason besides how you're feeling that day?

Write down the names of them all and put them in a hat / bucket ..... then on the day of the activity pick one.
Keeps you sane......ish.

However I'm feeling that day. I only have the 9,5,&4 as far as big goes. I don't use the 5 for choppy stuff because I don't have to. It's a toss up between the 9 and 4. Which needs love today? Who was out last? If I'm feeling extra choppy I'll grab the 4. Sometimes I don't look and reach in the bag haha.

I have a 2 and a 9. When I'm doing big stuff I always grab my 9 because of the length for chopping and batoning, that's just my personal preference.

In summary: just take your 9 =)

This will probably work! haha

Or just choose one and then the next time choose something different till you have made the complete rotation.

Or do a poll here and let the Beckerhead's help you decide. I know plenty of guys have done that before.

So many decisions.................. I know........

I do find my self getting in a rut and picking favorites though. And then the others don't even get used. Kinda fun to take the knife that has gotten the least amount of love and see how she handles. Each one is a little different and may take some getting used to. Thats part of the fun of owning so many I guess.

If it's gonna be for multiple tasks, the Machax wins out for me.
To me it's the most versitile of the bunch.
I used mine today to process firewood, strike a firesteel to make a fire in the back yard, and make marshmallow sticks for smores. :D
I opened up my box-O-blades and went straight for the 4. No second thoughts.
A convexed Machax can get some work done in a hurry!
It's just a worker plain and simple.

I tend to gravitate toward the bigger blades. Pretty much a one stop shop for me. I do own, and use the smaller blades on occasion, but the big ones, aka BK9, and BK4, can do it all. I do process a lot of firewood, so the larger blades work best for me.

If I were going to go on a day hike, I would either take the 14, or 2 on occasion. The 14 is light, fits in my sling bag well, and I pretty much just use it to process the food I take on a hike.

My 2 big boys have little sidekicks with them...4/11 and 7/13...more often than not my 4/11 go with me only because i get more use out of the 11 than i do the 13..but if the big boys where solo i would have a harder choice as to which to take..i would break it down to season...summer time i deal with more briars and vines so the 4 seems too make quick work there..and in winter..... well the 7 needs to play too lol ...

As far as the full sized Beckers go - there's not much that can't be done with a 9 and a 5.

There will be those who will say that one can do it all with a 7, or a 10 or or a 2 and while they may be correct, especially in regards to the 7, such a circumstance would deprive one of the pleasures of the 9 (Can't not have a 9 as someone once said) or the wonders of my favorite, the BK5.

Good post- If I am going hiking/flyfishing/hunting and don't plan to spend the night, I grab the 16- for me it has the most utility for its size and weight- however if I am camping with the family or planning to sleep in the woods, I want a bigger blade to process firewood etc. and the BK9 excels at this and is also excellent for yard work tasks. Oddly enough, my BK2 which is the one responsible for all my Becker-mania has lately just stayed in my BOB.
