Do you usually clean your electric knife sharpener? And what brand do you use?
Me I usually use a brush to scrub off the debris and rinse with water.

You will find that most members, on Bladeforums, do not use electric sharpeners.

However, if I were to use an electric sharpener, I would call the manufacturer and ask how they recommend cleaning the equipment. I wouldn't be rinsing electronic equipment with water, but that's just me.

Place in large black container, then wheel container out to the side of the road. Kidding aside, what you are doing sounds sufficient. As long as you are exposing just the actual stones or whatever is used to grind the blade to water, and not the electrical components, you're probably okay.
If you get the wrong things wet and blow it to hell, then you can learn the art of hand sharpening.

Especially not when it's plugged in. ;)

If its still under warranty return it to the store and use the money to get a good manual sharpening system or a good hone. Electric sharpeners do more harm to the blade than good.

Besides the excellent idea of throwing it out, they sell electrical part cleaner at most automotive stores. They even sell cleaner you can use while the device is energized.
