i just run them over hot water and use a air can to dry it. Sometimes I use rubbing alcohol on the blades. I'm starting to carry small fixed blades more often since they're almost maintenance free.
Dish soap and water most of the time. About every 6 months i take the whole knife apart and clean it up real good. If it has those phosphorus bronze washers i clean em up real good with steel wool. Reassemble and oil the washers with very very little vegitable oil. They literally feel as good as new after iv gotten used to the dirty gritty feeling for a while and then get em cleaned up real good.
Forget about it in my jeans pocket. Wash and dry them. Find it, curse loudly-- and then oil profusely. Works better than you'd think. I'm sure there are better methods than this though--KV
I have achieved my best results using hot water, Barkeeper's Friend, and an old toothbrush. Then thoroughly dry with a towel, (and sometimes, the wife's hairdryer if necessary) and put away. No oil, grease or other contaminants are used.
I take it apart and use warm soapy water and a toothbrush to clean it. I give the pivot a drop of 3-in-1 oil (small, small amount) and then polish the blade with Metal Glo.
For those who use soap & water, do you go up to the point where no remnants of oil remains? Or just to remove dirt, but leave it a bit slick due to grease/oil? Especially taken apart, the pivot & bushing might be greasy.
