how do you display your knives???

Considerations include: kids around the house, the kid's friends roaming around the house, glass - or no see-through, locks, living room or study etc etc.

Your input is very important and will be gr8tly appreciated.

I've been thinking of making a small display case out of wood, with a plexiglass window. I think that plexi would be good, because I wouldn't have to worry about it shattering if someone bumped into it. The only thing with plexi is it will scratch much more easily. I would definitely include some way of locking it.

i plan to buy a sears tool chest this week.
they have lots of different kinds, roll-away or benchtop, lots of drawers, metal contruction with locks, relatively inexpensive compared to wood cabinetry, and you can always use it for your tools if you get something nicer.

I've been working on a display cabinet with Bladeforums member Johan; I've seen pics of his work and it's beautiful. Unfortunately I've had to place the project on hold for a while, so I won't have the cabinet for some time, but I'd definitely recommend him; he's a pleasure to work with and will design a cabinet to meet your needs.

John Yeackley also has some really nice looking display stands displayed on the Top of Texas knives website.

I display my knives in lockable wood with glass front display cases as of now but I am looking at trying somthing a little different.I work for an after market motorcycle parts distributer and we carry all types of displays.
What I'm thinking of doing is taking one of the 4'tall rotating sunglass displays and doing a few modifications to set it up to accept knives insted of sunglasses,do a little work with indirect lighting and hopefully have what I would consider to be the ultimate display.

I use 24inch x48 inch cases made by Jim Cox out of Iowa. The cases are made out of oak with glass fronts. They are 2 inches deep. Inside is a cloth covered piece of foam rubber. They knives can be arranged any way you choose. When the lid is closed(Locking Clasps) the glass pushes the knives into the foam enough to hold them in place. I display at several shows each year, and even in transit the knives stay put. The cases come with a hanging strip to mount to a wall. It is very secure.

I keep my knives in a mahogony and maple chest I built. I've going to make a couple of little cases (4 folders) as gifts for a couple of knife buddies, but they're still in the designing stage. I've also started collecting a couple of fixed blades so I'm going to have to creat some sort of case for them, I have no idea what. I think it'll be prudent to wait until I've collected all the fixed blades I'm planning on getting and then design the cabinet. What fixed blades? The whole Busse line

Thanks Ryan for the plug.
I'm designing some end tables and coffee tables with glass tops and a lockable drawer.
You could arrange your collection in the drawer shut it and lock it up and view your collection through the top. Could be lighted. Great conversation pc. Let me know what you think.

Right now my knives are fully exposed but on a high shelf, however, I plan to rig a piece of plexiglass to the shelfing system to provide a little more security.

Hey - thanks everybody for your answers.

It takes me awhile to answer - cause I am 8-12 time zones away...

As for ordering cabinets from the states to Israel - very unpractical and extremely expensive.

I will however use the ideas and contact a local carpenter.

The idea of the sunglasses unit display unit sounds very interesting indeed.

K Robinson - which after market dealer, and what are you riding??

I store my knives in a Sauder Woodworking storage cabinet. The one i have is app. 30x70 inch,American oak finish with lockable doors. It has adjustable selving that can hold countless knives.I have modified mine so the selves slide out ,like a cabinet drawer to get a better view of the knives. You can buy these cabinets for like $100.bucks here in Ohio. They also can be used for gun cabinets also.

Though I tend to keep the better blades out of harms way in case of 'surprise' entry I do have a user friendly way of displaying 'regular' blades I'm not too concerned with. I made a wood box to fit the top of my printer cabinet. About 3"x20"x24", hinged top 1/2 with plexiglass rabbitted in. The printer sits atop it, a doilee covering the box to please the wife. Kinda low key but still close by. If someone comes by I want to share knives with all I do is pull out box and voila, enough knives to ogle and play with for a good while. Nothing worth much except sentimental value in this 'show box' if they want to see special blades we arrange that elsewhere. I usually keep a few inexpensive 'gift' knives in this box to share with a new knife friend or relative. Always makes em happy to take away a 'prize'
