I don't have much room in my room to put tabletop shadowboxes or display cases, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how I could display knives on the wall, yet still be able to get them down easily?

Ill be watching this. I have the same problem. I want to display them ,but also make it easy to get a knife. I was thinking maybe pegboard?

Sure. You could make a simple shadowbox, whatever size you have room for. It only needs to be as thick as your thickest knife, and could be completely open for easy access.

See attachment. 1x4 lumber for the outside frames, cut down to the width you want. Thinner pieces for the shelves. And a piece of paneling or thin plywood for the back. Attach small pieces across the front of the shelves so knives don't fall off.

I'd be concerned about security though. Here's what I've purchased recently:

They come in different sizes, different layouts, different colors, and different grades. The drawers are easily lined with material or padded cabinet liners. Open the drawers to see the knives laid out, close the drawers and keep them out of sight and locked away.

i want some light in my display what should i do. something simple though
Those rope lights can work well. Easy to wire, can be hidden, and not expensive.

Track lighting on the ceiling works well too, especially if you want to avoid modifying the cabinet itself - like if it's an antique or there's no easy access for wiring.

Otherwise there are many, many small lights that can be installed a display case.

Great ideas guys, really helpful! Thinking about going with the small framed shadowboxes, possibly using some sort of brackets that will hold the knives by the pocket clips if they have them. I had honestly never even thought about getting a toolbox to keep them in. It would be great to have when we have family and kids around, considering almost everything is within easy reach unless i lock them in the closet. (the knives, not the kids...) There's always one or two that I forget though.

If your home is burglarized by a team of professionals, they'll simply carry away the toolbox. But it's great for keeping curious children, house guests, and little brothers out of your stuff.

"Safety First", meaning the knives' safety of course. ;)

The way I figure, if a burglar wants something bad enough, they're gunna take it.. There's nothing you can do short of buying a 700lb gun safe if someone wants to walk in and carry everything away, and chances are they'd find a way to get that too.

Most burglaries are committed by people known to the homeowner - friends-of-friends, family, ex-girlfriends, etc., people who have been in the house before and know exactly what's accessible and what isn't.

And when it's a stranger, it's rarely a professional who could crack a safe. More usual, it's junkies who need some quick cash and who aren't in the house for more than a couple of minutes. Quick-grab whatever is easy to carry and easy to sell.

And again it's also about safety, keeping your knives from being lost/borrowed/destroyed by 'friendlies' in the home - siblings, friends, kids, spouses, etc. :)

Safe for me...

Not about to advertise I've got a collection.
I agree, and thought hard about all of the different options. I decided on the tool chests as a compromise in aesthetics, ability to organize, cost, security, immobility, concealment, expandability, display-ibility, space, and weight.

Here is one alternative that I considered, a custom handmade cabinet. Open it up to display the knives, close it and padlock it to keep contents out of sight and relatively secure. Large storage area in the bottom for boxes and sheaths. Lockable display drawers.

The time and expense it would take me to make it were why I went with the Craftsman boxes instead. I'm no carpenter...

This is my shadow box with glass shelves, space about 1.5'' apart. 2'' deep. That I have in my man room, fully secured and alarmed. Kids don't get to go in without supervision and it has no outside access. I love to be able to just reach and get whatever tickles my fancy any one day. I have shown it several times, I am sure some folks are tired of seeing it. But you asked.:)

Went from having no ideas to almost too many.. That looks amazing Mr. Todd! Did you build it yourself? How did you cut the glass?

One of my friends has that knife right above the bright red one about mid-way down the left side of the box furthest to the right (doubt that could get any more confusing..) It's got a pretty unique way of opening doesn't it?

How did you cut the glass?___ I did, routed every groove for the shelves.:grumpy: I had a glass company cut all the shelves out of scrap and drops, then I took a belt sander to the edges so I would not get cut.

A Friend of mine gave me that knife and it does open uniquely.

Thanks for the comments,
My friends call me Jim,
I hope you will too,
Jim
