how do you feel about knife usage?

If you had to knives that were similar in design, so therefore suited for the same use, but one costs 40$ and the other costs 400$, would you be more careful or less likely to use the 400$ knife? Im not talking about abusive tasks. Im talking about perfectly normal, non abusive or damaging EDC tasks that wont harm the knives, that both knives are completely capable of performing. Would you tend to baby the $400 more than the $40?
I would use them equally. I am planning on buying a Sebenza this coming spring, and plan to use it for anything I would use my Kershaw Skyline for, and plan to enjoy every minute of it.

I have NO problem using a highend knife :)

But when it came time to lay our hardwood floors I left the XMs, Sebenzas, Striders and other customs in my knife display and brought out the Combo Edge ZDP Endura 4 for beater work.

Cutting thick tar paper, prying staples and carpet tack strips out of the subfloor all could of been done by anyone of the "higher end" knives... but why beat the hell out of them when truthfully the ZDP, FRN and hole opener (for the gloves) was a better choice.

So yes, I will break down cardboard any day of the week with my Large Stainless Damascus Sebenza... But I wouldn't want to tackle a hardwood floor job with it. Although it could do it, and infact I did build our kids playset with it (well it helped when needed :D.)

Just get it and use it  Lifes too short to think, would of, could of, and should of

Unless it has sentimental value it gets used.

My customs cost less than a Busse or a Sebenza but...As soon as I get them I play with them, hard.:)

This is what the knife in the second photo looks like now. It is my EDC.

As I've acquired knives I find I place more value on the marks the knife gets as I move through life with it, than any dollar value attached to a clean unmarked blade.

If I ever pass down my knives I'd like to give a collection of well-used, put-away-wet blades than a pristine collection that would sit in a safe somewhere.

i guess it would depend why i bought it. if i bought it to use, I'd use it, if i bought it to keep it nice, i'd keep it nice

My most expensive knives are William Henry. I sometimes carry and use them, but I sure do treat them differently. Also have a few others that are less expensive but are also treated more carefully because I bought them for the looks and don't want to scar them. However, ugly knives are treated with no respect, even when they are expensive.

I don't buy any knives that I won't use, however I tend to use my less expensive knives if they will do just as a good a job, which they usually do. I sharp cheap knife will do most cutting jobs. Now and then, its fun to use the good stuff but in my case, I worry about loosing one.

Most people I know would think I was crazy if they knew what my EDC knives cost.

I use all of mine, regardless of cost, etc. I have one I will probably never use, a Buck 119 I bought for sentimental reasons. Other than that, I use, but never abuse, all of my knives.

Chuddy Bear Leather, he has made several for me in the past, also got one today(tank buster) and have another on order from him. He is top notch all the way. Actually talked to him on the phone tonight to iron out the details on a sheath I am having made right now for a HOGFSH. He knows his knives and his sheaths are functional works of art. And its only a few weeks for custom leather. Highly recommended.

No difference will be there between $40 and $400.
Properly heat-treated and sharpened thing always has special meaning to me, which
requires careful handling and proper use.

Knives are tools, tools were created to be used. There are some things I'd use a cheaper "beater" knife for that I'd never use my higher end knives for, but that's a personal thing. Also if I'm learning a new sharpening technique then I'll test it on cheaper knives first. If you're dishing out the dough don't be afraid to get your moneys worth.

I'd use the $400 knife more, if I paid that much for a knife I'd try and use it as much as possible.

I don't own anything worth $400.

But, as close as I have, I have used them...

I think it comes down to what you value....

If you value them for their ability to separate matter, then you will use them.

If you value them as sculpture, a fetish, or for their re-sale value, then you probably won't.

I have one knife I do not use, it was made for me, I was separated from it for awhile, and now that I have it again, it stays in it's box. But, I don't use it, because it is a real collectible, one of a kind.

My beater/drywall knife is a Spyderco Military S90V/Carbon Fiber sprint run piece. I don't spend $200 or more on a knife so I can baby it. I spend that much so I don't have to.

Depends on why I bought the knife in the first place.

I have expensive "users" and I have inexpensive "collection" knives.

As I said in a related thread, life is too short for ugly knives (not original, but it fits). This is my EDC:
