How do you go fishing?

I was lucky enough as a child to have an uncle buy me a lifetime hunting/fishing license. I've gone hunting as often as possible over the years, but I can't for the life of me remember when I went fishing in the last say....10 years. I don't even have a rod/reel anymore. What do you use for some portable fishing? Something that breaks down into a packable size for a weekend hiking trip.

Pretty much the same here. I used to fish years ago, and would like to try it again. Maybe with primitive tech.

Here you go. Fishing starts at about the 2:00 min. mark.

He makes it look easy doesn't he?

Ray makes everything look easy! Thanks for the video.

To answer your original question, what would you be fishing for and on what kind of water? There are lots of "ultra light" pack rods out there and some still fishing collapsible rods.

As far as spinning gear goes, the only decent pack rods I've found are the "Fish Eagle II" rods from Cabela's. Multitude of choices if you fly fish.

With a big flat rock and a cliff!! The only way I'll catch those damn things, only one good fishing day in my life and it wasn't fair. I went 10 years as a kid catching 3 jack fish (Northern Pike). I suck.

I like Ray Mears "hobo fishing" tecnique. Simple, portable and effective. I'll try to find a link for you.
Although If I was Ray ( :D ) , I'd swap the aluminium can for a plastic soft drink bottle with lid. Not much extra weight, but it gives the user a water bottle as well as a more robust reel that can't cut the line like a ruptured tin can

Kind regards
Mick

Basic, $20 telescopic and replaced the plastic reel with a $20 reel.

Works fine. For $40 it is always at the ready.

Good thought, may as well use something that has multiple uses.

Darteres, instead of searching for "pack rods" try "travel rods." Until you get going most of them will do just fine. I think a 6.5' rod for 8-12 lb. test line and a reel to match will cover you for most anything.

Cabela's is always a good choice, Bass Pro's Shops are probably another.

I just use my regular 2 piece rod. I made a rod holder out of a flourescent light tube protector, and strap that to the outside of my pack. No need for special packable gear, that won't perform as well as your regular stuff.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about:

I dont have a portable rod and reel combo, but often fish in remote areas. I carry one rod and reel , and carry a small selection of lures. Mostly take jig heads , hooks , sinkers and some soft plastics when targeting bass. Soft plastics are versatile enough to fish anywhere anytime.

This is my go to pack rod. Shimano Exage AX STC Spin

I've had a few pack rods over the years but this one has lasted the longest. Pretty good backbone and a decent enough tip for casting lures up to 40gm. I use a 1500 size reel spooled with 10lbs - 12lbs Fireline on mine. If you're not fishing often I suggest using braids and gelspun lines. Monos don't do very well for long term storage due to disintergration from UV and line memory.

If you'd like to get started on fishing again do e-mail me the kind of game you are going after. I can help out with some leader materials, hooks and swivels and maybe even a few lures, all at no cost to you.

Thanks for all the great replies! Doc, that is a sweet link. I think I'm going to add that to my weekend projects next week.

I have an honest, very amusing story (least to me since I was there around age 6) about a time my Grandfather was "southern fishing", but the full story only comes out around a camp fire with a few brews and a couple of people remembering a good man. The end result was handing a lit stick to someone asking questions, who in a panic throws it over the side. Best quote of my life..."now you're fishing too".

As a side note, it's not something I do. I don't recommend it to anyone to do. It's dangerous and I'm sure illegal.

I really like Shakespeare Ugly Stiks for camping/backcountry use. I have 2 piece rods, but have seen 4 piece spinning rods (in a tube) at Gander mountain for around $40. I also have an old Eagle Claw 4 piece spin/fly that ive used forever. Ive seen these at Cabelas, for about $40 also.
