Anyone know the trick to this? I guess it would help if I had better lighting over the workbench where my saw is, but my dad and I won't be able to get to that for a while.Or maybe a long time now that my mom has gotten us started on her remodeling project

Any way, is there anything you guys use to make it easy/easier to see than just marking it with a pencil or scratching it in with a scribe?
Thanks

Matt,
I use an Exacto Knife with a #11 (sharp pointed) blade. It leave a deep, clean scratch, works on all materials, even steel, and when it dulls, just put a new blade in. You can scribe real close to the pattern.

Use the back side of the point.

Thanks Guys
I have an X acto knife with lots of #11 blades. I use them for cutting details into carvings sometimes. So I'll have to try that out.
I don't have any soapstone, but I may look into it too.

Matt,
I hit the Micarta with some 220 paper just by hand when I get a new full sheet. This turns the black material sort of a dark flat greenish color? This allows a black pemanant maker to show up on it. Then I try to split the marker line on the bandsaw

Just my way........

I agree with the markers and Shapries. Red and Green work pretty well, too.

Just a suggestion - Liquid Paper (a competitor to "White Out" ?) makes a fine white marker for corrections. It should be available at Staples or Office Max. It produces a white line.

Also, Scuba shops sometimes carry a white pen for marking your name on your black scuba gear.
