I see a lot of people with the cutting edges of their blades having a mirror polish when mine no matter how i do it it is never that shiny, so how do you do it and are there any significant performance altering effects of a mirror shine? Please help!

Thanks, TheDandyLion

You will need higher grits for sharpening medium

for instance I use 8000 grit stone, it can be polished with many lower grits as well.

If you check out the maintenance part of this forum there is many wise and experienced people there to help you out.

I could help but am terrible without actually showing you.

its like teaching someone basketball over text haha.

An Edge Pro Apex will do the trick, if you have $200+ that you don't know where else to spend.

For my knives, I stop at 5 micron. It gives a semi mirror edge that cuts like a laser. For me, going past that level did not make it cut better and it took a lot of time (and seemed to make the edge less durable).

Paper sharpening wheels. I'm too impatient for the whole progression through grits on a traditional system. Paper wheels take a few minutes to make a mirror polished hair whittling edge.

As far as durability of the edge, I think a fine mirrored edge is more fragile than something a little more "toothy". However, I'll take the mirror edge any day; its just more fun!

I use a 1000/6000 grit Steelex Japanese Water Stone. Then I strop with green Chromium Oxide compound. Gets me nice mirrored edges that cut very well and pop hairs with little to no effort. Doesn't cost too much either, I think the Steelex stones usually run 30-40 bucks and I got my strop with compounds for 20.

I use a $35 lanskey system I bought off of Amazon and then I touch it up with a spyderco sharpmaker. It is really easy to get the mirror finish on the edge. I did buy an extra fine sapphire stone but it is not needed to get a good mirror shine.

...

This. Literally takes less than 2 minutes.

I free hand sharpen, C, F, EF DMT, 1000 & 1500 grit sandpaper, and Washboard followed with Balance Strop

Don't ask how long though, definitely satisfying!
:p

Some members like the mirror bevel to have smoother cutting experience, but maintain a micro teeth at the apex.
Some go all the way polished up to apex.

I don't have 30 minutes to sharpen a knife to a mirror edge, that's why i have the paper wheels.Haven't used anything since! I have a perfectly good Sharpmaker that just sits around all lonely looking.

I use C,F,EF DMT then straight into Micromesh (wetted and slapped onto glass) through the grits 1500 - 4000. I have grits up to 12,000 but I don't see much point going above 4k.
