How do you identify your folder so it can be returned to you if lost?

Yeah I know....don't lose it,

I used a label maker and put my mobile # on it and stuck it on the inside scale (handle).
I suppose one could attach a small tag to a lanyard as well.
Any other thoughts.....?

You could always engrave your name on the blade so you can prove it's yours if someone finds it.

I've never thought about this. If I lost mine, in most circumstances, I wouldn't expect to see it again. I'd probably take it apart and scrape something into the underside of the scales.

The ZT 0550 I'm currently carrying has a serial number. I suppose I should write it down somewhere.

To be honest...I don't mark them and if I lose them I expect to make someones day and hope they use it responsibly.

Crazy outlook on losing someting Nate1714! But honorable to say the least. If you had a few knives, you could just buy a dremel engraver for 15 bucks or a harbor freight engraver for 8. Both are vibrating engravers which work well.

When you send your BM, I believe for $5 they can mark it on the blade up to 20 characters...don't know if Spyderco offer this...this is why BM rock! Send them your blade & they tune it & sharpen for free. Add $5 and put your name & number next to the butterfly

Ok just check..BM offers custom lasermark...text or logo..$5 is 1 to 25 characters per knife...

If text & logo is $7

Multiple locations...so you can put your name on one side then phone #on the other side

I've never considered that I would lose it. It has a good clip and has never come loose in all the yrs I've carried one. If I do lose it, I would imagine the finder will be one happy feller.

No ones got folders like mine

^^^ Lol indeed.
However I guess that would make them more likely to get picked up by a stranger who just found something cool.

I would do the engraving. As for it being on the inside of the handle, most people probably wouldn't think to look there. Maybe an engraved bead for your lanyard?

Does BM engrave knives that aren't Benchmades?
The $8 - $14 engravers aren't a bad idea, it'd be worth the money in the end if it helps you get a lost knife back.

I don't really see the point of hiding the engraving under the handle. How is the finder supposed to see it and use the information to return it? I don't imagine that most people who would find a knife would take it apart.

I've often suggested engraving ones name and phone number somewhere highly visible on the knife. Makes it very easy for an honest person to return it. And leaves no excuses not to return it for someone who might be inclined to keep it.

Personally, I don't take a casual attitude towards losing something expensive that I spent my hard-earned money on, especially if it's something I'll need to replace with a new one. And I don't consider my knives to be gifts for other people if I should be unfortunate enough to lose one, I'm just not that generous. If I lost a knife I'd want it back, and I'd go to great lengths to get it back. A little engraving seems like very little effort that could yield a very high return if it puts your lost knife back in your hands.

I seriously doubt that Benchmade would mark a non BKC blade. They may use jigs I'm not sure though. They can do a bunch of different things including the mentioned logos (custom too) and fonts, bold, italics etc... different spots on the blade (front or back) , and even on some models grips.

My 810 is getting done as we speak.

As for the op's question, all of my knives are different from stock in some way. I could tell mine apart by the color, grind or if I had to break it down by polished internals.

If I lose it, I lose it. I don't lose my knives, and if I ever do, I'll just accept it and replace it. I normally carry one of Kershaw's budget line(OSO Sweet, Kuro, Clash, or the Half Ton) or Spyderco Tenacious, and since none of those knives are more than $35, I'm not too worried about losing them. Personally I hate engraving, and I'd rather pay $35 to NOT have to worry about sullying my knife with engraving.

I don't bother. I've only lost two knives in my life and one of them I later found in my truck and neither was particularly valuable. Most expensive knife I own is $85 and that's about my limit. I doubt if I tagged it that it would get returned anyway. The way I look at it, if I can't afford to lose it then it's too expensive for my budget. Maybe you could tether it to a 'biner and clip it to a belt loop to reduce the risk of loss.

But if you Engrave all your Knives ~~ does this hurt you in Selling or Trading them as far as price goes or Collection price in the long run.??

If I lost a knife I would likely just kiss it goodbye. On the other hand if I saw some dude carrying a Sebenza, SnG or the like it would very likely be my lost knife!

The only knife I have that I would cry over losing is my Sebenza, and it has a custom made graphic, so it would be easy to identify. My other knives, just a couple of Benchmades, Cases, etc....oh well. I'll just have to buy another one. Hardly a bad day.:)

Wolf-man, it would. Because people would be buying or trading for a knife with someone elses name and information engraved into it. This would lose value simply because most people wouldn't want a knife with another persons name on it, because it's now theirs and they have this name on it that isn't, and I'm sure you see the point why.
So I would say it would damage value a little even though you're putting more time and money into the knife.

I would do it if it was a knife I planned on keeping forever. But if I planned to maybe let it go down the road, I would hold off engraving it.
