I'll probably get field dressed for this.

make clump of newspaper
put in forge
light paper
turn on gas

This way your hand is not near the gas at startup.

I use this method for lighting the wood in my barbecue, except I pour a couple ounces of corn oil into the newspaper. Burns real hot for a long time, starts the wood every time. I figure propane easier to light so no corn oil needed.

It is also very easy to take a $3 piezo igniter and place the electrode it in the burner tube. They are in the hardware store with the grill stuff. I bought 5 for $5 at a knife show in April. You can salvage all the parts for free from an old BBQ grill on trash day.
Turn on gas valve...push button...woof...ignited.

I put a pilot light on one, too. I used a pilot gas solenoid for the master shut off, and placed the pilot light assembly at the rear port. The parts came from an old hot water tank. The forge could be turned on and off with a foot switch to a secondary solenoid in the line after the main shut-off. Step on the pedal...flame off...step on it again...flame on.

I turn on the burners, stick my BBQ lighter in the door opening, and then rub the burnt hair off my hand.

I just hold a cigarette in my mouth... WHAT!! I thought all knifemakers lost their eyebrows this way...
