How do you keep the brass on your khuks shinny?

Hi all!

I am absolutely thrilled with my new 20" Chitlangi I got on DOTD, I already made it wickedly OMFG sharp and put a mirror finish on the steel blade, the brass bolster, buttcap and keeper.

I am wondering if there is something I can use to keep the brass shinny for longer periods since the sweat in my hands tends to tarnish the brass quickly and I have to buff it again to get the shine back. I like to have all the metals in this khuk polished to a mirror since it will be more of a display item / emergency use for my home and not a beater.

I seen spray on laquers on the internet but want to know what do you guys use to protect your brass besides elbow grease.

Thanks!

Any polish that leaves a protective coating (IIRC Flitz does). Possibly even a wax coating on top for longer protection.

Nevr-Dull, and MAAS polish and elbow grease are all I use. For display pieces I add a coat of Carnuba wax.

Flitz is my choice, it is like magic. I love the stuff and buy it in the big pail. :)

The traditional method is to smear the brass parts of the blade with yak dung. Well, actually, you just push the handle of the knife into the yak dung "dispenser" and work it back and forth until the yak lets you know the knife is ready.

GREAT one Danny. I'm never going to get this posted I'm laughing so much. So few words for such a good visual. Thanks...I needed that.

You could try a coat of clear polyurythane or nail polish to keep the brass from reacting with your skin.

Well, I polished the brass and blade 3 times using Megiar's chrome and brass polish and then put 5 coats of liquid Nufinish and so far I have not been able to put a fingerprint on the brass or steel of the blade and the finish looks like it is wet. Hope it lasts! time will tell.

Champion job, Alex. Sounds like you're set. Probably cheaper than the traditional yak treatment, too.

Interesting idea and please keep us informed as I have a few display Khukuri's I sure would like to have such a good looking and hopefully long lasting protection.
