How do you keep track of your knives?

A while back, a member here asked the question of how knife knuts keep a record of their knives. I can't find that thread, so if someone knows of it and can link to it, it would be much appreciated.

With some of the things going on in our life right now, I'm finding the need to record all of our valuables, and I need to do it in a way that is easy for an insurance company to understand & evaluate.

Not an issue for a small number of knives, but it is an issue for a large collection.

For those who do keep a record, what info do you record?

thx - cpr

I would scan any reciepts and pics with the boxes of model #s of the more current ones. I would load info into a spread sheet. I would send that info into your insurance if you want them insured in a personal articles floater (I think that is what it is called) in insurance lingo. I would also find some source material for appraisal value if that is what you are looking for. This would be more applicable to antiques or highly collectable ones. I would consult your insurance co. to find out how they would like you to present evidence of value, or ask them how they would appraise your knives individually. I think exel spread sheet would be best, you could insert pics with the info all on the same document that way. You may want to put them in a gun safe, if you are worried about them walking away from your home.

Sorry, did not address your last question:
I would record:
Maker
Model
Material of scales, bolsters, blades, and liners if you will.
Country of origin
Year of production
a comprehensive grading scale Mint, near mint, very fine etc. with parameters for each grade.
Reciept info and where purchased if you have that info.
