How do you know???

Working on one of the Kith knives, and its 1084, did a heat treat tonight, and my question is,

How do you know when you've decarbed (not sure if thats the word) the blade?? I ran it across a 180 belt and the NEW file skates like Kristi Yamaguchi , just want to make sure I get it all off.

If you have an etchant like ferric chloride, the martinsite should etch as an uniformly dark color, Decarb would
show up as a splotchy etch, assuming the entire blade got hardened.
