How do you like your pull?

Tough? Soft? Do you attribute the pull to quality of the knife? Do you adjust a knife's pull or just let it break in?

I like an easy pull. I don't want to fight with my knife to open it, especially if my hands are cold/wet. I like a smooth pull, and don't associate heavy pull with quality. Quite the opposite. I've handled and owned some great knives, to include the original Hen and Roosters made by the Bertram's, and they all had very light pulls, but impeccable quality. Since the dynamics of cutting will keep the blade open, and even friction folders are safe with proper knife handling, I don't feel the need for a spring to keep my knife open in use.

Light is good.

Pretty much what Carl said. Light to medium for me.

Does a light pull equate to slow or weak snap when closing? I like a medium pull on a knife, but I think a strong snap is important also.

Medium to firm is my preference. I'd much rather have too strong than too weak, as you can do a few things to loosen 'em up. But if they are soft and mushy, then I'm not interested. SAKs are about my minimum (5) and 6 to 7 is just right.

I prefer a firm to tough pull. For me, I equate the pull as equal to the firmness of how the blade rest in the open position. For me the tougher the pull the tougher the pivot, the tighter the hold, the more confidence I have in it staying open.

Completely subjective of course, and possibly totally psychological. To each they're own.

My farmer lock has a really easy pull and has a bit of blade play. It's a great knife, love it a lot, but it's irritating sometimes.

I have weak fingernails so prefer a medium pull but don't mind a little stiffer pull as long as the blade can be pinched open or has an eo notch.

Aren't SAKs some of the most consistent knives out there? What about a particular model SAK as a baseline for a scale?

I've very often thought that the Victorinox tinker or spartan should be the gold standard of pocket knife pull. They certainly are a standard of sorts on the world wide consumer market.

+1. I prefer it a bit stronger rather than too light - especially with the closing snap being the most important factor to me. I like my closing snap to be very positive. For me a knife with a 7-8 pull is ideal.

Ah yes. I forgot to add, if my blade has a enough room for a pinch I prefer to open that way as well.

yeah, some of my other stuff the pull is like a 2-4, CSC half moon trappers. all of em open so easily. does any one have any to confirm?

The early CSC knives had very weak pull at what I would call about a 3 maybe even a 2. In more recent years they have fixed that issue and I would say the pull is a nice solid 5 which is ideal for me.

hmm, ill have to get some of those, because the ones i have are definitely closer to a 2, hey 2dead, if you see this, how are the pulls on the other CSC HMTs?

This is the HMT that I have and is one of my favorite knives! Made within the last year or two and the pull is around 5 or 6. I absolutely love the copper bolsters and dogs head shield too.
