How Do You Make Your Knife Decisions?

Before BFC, I used to go to a knife store, if there was one around, or buy a knife magazine, or see what my friends were carrying or had stashed away. Now I read and post over here. What I've seen and read about on these forums has impelled me to go to my first knife show, and has made me more knowledgeable when I visit a knife store. But I did not purchase anything at the show, nor did I buy anything at the knife store (although he had a new Benchmade 730 Ares signed and numbered, that dealers got and it was for sale, but I didn't realize what he was offering me until I had gone to the show and by then...)

This has not been the only thing I've missed out on by not having information at my fingertips, and it won't be the last.

But after I have researched a subject and know what I what, using only the information on these forums and not bothering the shop owner with browsing, then I look for the best price from the on-line dealers. Those that I have actually talked to have been cordial, but I know what I want. If I want information from a dealer, then I don't shop price, I am willing to spend extra for extra service.

But in truth, I have been getting this extra service from the forums and so far haven't found that dealers can provide me with anything that I can't find here for free.

As for custom knives, I don't have any experience with makers, but I would hazard a guess that the talk is included in the price.

So I make my knife decisions by posting and reading on the forums, then looking for price, then checking on the reputation of the on-line dealer. It sounds harsh, but the service I want from my dealer is that the price is fair, that the item be shipped promptly, that there is no problem with returns for defects. If he wants to talk to me about knives, he can talk to me over here.

Thinking about changing my name to Webman, as I always had a fondness for The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Respectfully yours,

Before BFC I wasn't really obsessed with knives. Since BFC I've quadrupled the number of knives I own.

I decide what knives I "want" by the reveiws they get here on the forum. If it seems like a knife I'm interested in gets lots of positive press here, I know that if I buy it and don't like someone will want it.

I think that buying used on the forum is one of the best ways to get a good deal on a knife. Most of the people here are honest and buying from a fellow forumite is a pretty safe venture. I watch for the knives I want in the "For Sale" area, and if I find a good deal I try to pick it up.

This place is hard on my wallet, but as least I'm getting a ton if gratification out of it.

I have been obsessed with folding knives since I was a wee little one, but I do have to admit since KnifeForums.com came about, it has made me worse. Then BladeForums.com came shortly afterwards, now I am a full blown knife addict! Thanks guys, as if I wasn't hooked enough before

Seriously though, these forums had made me a lot more aware of different knives that are to offer. I used to just collect and buy folding pocket type knives, but these forums have turned me into also collecting the one handers or as some hate to say, tactical type knives. What better place to see and learn about knives than this place

Hey, besides that, all the people have to talk knives with now, since in my area knife collectors are far and in-between!

Just two minor problems left, after consulting BF:
1) A knife has to fit your hand if you foresee to use it...
2) A knife has to fit your wallet...
Otherwise, deciding may be more fun than buying.

Thanks UW. I lurked around the For Sale by Individual forum but haven't sprung for anything yet because I am still a little shaky on the "pretty safe" side of the venture. It seems the risk of getting burnt is not worth the savings of a few bucks. I guess I won't know for real until I make the leap. Also I am not too clear on who is selling over there, and the issue of honesty has led to quite a few post on the Good, Bad and Ugly side of things. Some seem to have quite a number of different NIB items, and the grey area of what makes one person a dealer and another simply an individual is problematic to me, given the events of the last few weeks in regard to monetary support for the forum administration. Sorry for winding off topic...

  1. Find a new knife (this wouldn't have been possible without BF)
  2. Check BF for comments
  3. Check space left on Credit Card
  4. Buy

Simple as that. Although 9 times out of 10 CC is full

But now I've got a job, and I shall be rewarding myself with my first ever paycheck

I have been out of work since Feb. 1. So. I've had a lot of time to spend here, some have suggested too much time here. In that time I have managed to buy my first two handmade knives, and ordered my first True Custom, oh and I'm in the process of ordering a knife for my wifes birthday, she's going to be so pleased.

I keep saying to myself, "No more knives!" But I don't listen to me anymore than anyone else does. This is becoming a real problem!

Man I wish I knew! that's the first step in the 12 steps of recovery in this spiraling curse we have! But since I haven't found out why then I'll just keep buying!

I also like a knife that fits your hand, it's got to be comfortable or you won't use it, some knives are designed for looks and not grips.

Next it has to cut, those that are too thick bladed I can't stand, prefer a blade that is ground most of the way to the back, as I'll not be hacking with it, (in regards to folders that is) Also I prefer the knife not to have a notch at the start of the blade, the ones that do seem to catch on what ever you are trying to cut and can be frustrating, I know folks have their reasons for putting it there, but I have also seen a LOT of folks NOT put it on their blades and they work great, soooo hmmm....to each his own, they say you don't have to buy the knife if you don't want to and that is a choice I usually make.

Lately I've been quite taken with the William Henry line of knives, the Lancets in particular. I am building a pretty nice collection of different handle material and bolster styles, love the flow of the bolster into the handle scales, just plain nice..

Hey PhilL, was that you I heard saying that last Friday at the NY Show? Thought I recognized a Brooklyn accent. Would have liked to have met, because I seem to have many of the same problems and we could have commiserated. Maybe some other time.

V44, were you part of the group with Les, Attila, Rugger, Ronald Reagan, etc. in the Lobby? I tried to E-mail you but you don't have one listed, I really need someone to say, "I'm okay, you're okay." Things are getting out of hand on this end

Like a lot of people. I buy it if I like it. Now if I'm going to use it, I usually look for something less expensive. My absolute favorite cheapie knife is:
GERBER EZ OUT...
Why? Cuz' it's got great steel, serration (I always get 1/2 to 3/4 serrated for work knives) and it is SUPER LIGHT.
I put it in my pocket, and most of the time, I have to double check if it's there. If I really wanted to go overboard, I'd buy one those KLOTZI Mikey Walker, with the clip point. But WHAT'S THE POINT?
