How do you open your Kiwi?

I just received my first Spyderco, a bone Kiwi. Wow, what a cute little gentleman's knife . I've quickly mastered the spydie drop opening technique but it seems awkward to open by the thumb in hole method. How do you Kiwi owners do it?

I've found that it's a lot easier to open it using the hole if you put your pinky (or pinky and ring finger) on the other side of the handle and then open it with your thumb. Spyderdropping it is also fun.

I love the Kiwi, have them with a variety of handle materials, and carry one regularly. Open all of them except the plain stainless steel one the regular way - thumb in the hole, fingers gripping the handle, thumb it open. Found that a bit difficult on the smooth stainless, so added a fob to one, which I hook with my pinky when opening to prevent the knife from slipping, works very well. Had another stainless one hand engraved, that solved the traction problem too, but cost a bit more.

I think part of my problem is that I've developed some arthritis type of condition in my hands - growing old sucks and I'm only middle aged . My fingers are too scrunched trying to grip the handle and use the traditional thumb opening technique. I like the lanyard idea and I will try it.

Hmmm..... I announced in my original post that this was my first Spyderco - not true. I forgot about my cricket - that may be on purpose since shortly after I received it I dropped it on cement and bungered up the tip :( . One of these days I'll have to fix that.

I grip the sypderhole with my thumb and middle finger, index finger on the "front" portion of the handles (where the tang of the blade will meet the lock), pinky and ring fingers on border of the right scale (as Russell92 describes), I apply leverage to open the blade near to 75 degrees (still secured with thumb and middle finger), then I shift my pinky and ring fingers to grip the handles, release the middle and index and continue opening the blade with my thumb only. I hope this description is clear enough.

Of course I use sometimes the spydie drop just for fun.

That works. Just moving my index finger form the side to the end seems to add enough stability to get the job done.
