Hello everyone. This might be a dumb question, but I can't seem to find a definative answer.

Is the word "Bowie" pronounced as if it rhymed with louie or Joey?

I personally think it rhymes with Joey. Like the singer, David "Bowie".
I have heard so many "OPINIONS",
What I am looking for here is a factual answer and not an opinion or a guess. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I recently heard it this way. Here in the north most say Bowie like Joey while down south they pronounce it like Louie.
Of course, we must be right

French pronunciation is BHUE-ee
British pronunciation is BOE-ee

The Louisiana Bowies were of French descent, so they most likely said BHUE-ee. But I don't actually know fer sher.

Besides, "bowie knife" is so often mis-used, that it is only natural that it also be mispronounced.

I was raised up only 40 miles from James Blacks shop. We pronouce it Booie like with Louie.

Sorry, Sorry, everyone here is wrong. The absolute correct way to pronounce bowie is...... (Bus-e) or (Battle Mistress)

Either is acceptable.

Oh geez here I have to go and agree with Jerry

Back in my sailing days, off the New England coast we kept a knife on the boat for cutting tangled lines that got caught around our rudder.
It was a rather large fixed blade, double guard, with a clip point

We say boo eee when we can be bothered, to distinguish it from the thin white puke, err, duke.

I used to say Bowie like it rhymed with Joey. In the last two years I've relearned it and now I say Bowie so it rhymes with Louie.

In the 1950's vintage TV show the theme song always said Boo-ee. As I recall:
"Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie! He was a fighter, a fearless and mighty adventuring man. He roamed the wilderness and the plain, from Natchez to Rio Grande. With all the might of his gleaming blade he fought for the rights of man..." I've doubtless got a few words off, but I'm sure I haven't heard it in over 40 years. Could Hollywood possibly have had it wrong?

I think I have just located a few copies of that old TV show.

DrLathe,
Are them things that float in the water boys or booees?
Are them little cricks in Louisiana by-ous or by-ohs?
In Texas, where we have cities and streets and schools named after him, it is pronounced Boo-wee

I'm sure Boo-ee is correct, but I just can stop saying Bo-ee. Maybe you have to be Cajun.

Big-ass knife is also acceptable.

TomM,
Them things that float in the water are called BOO EEE's. (at least off the New England coast!!)

As a transplanted NYer living here in Florida, I'm still perfecting the Florida language. DAWGS, HAWGS, DADGUM and using the word ANYMORE in the future and present tense!! I never gave the Louisiana verbage a second thought!!! But I would say "Buy-You"

Now as far as David Bowie, he's a differnt kind of BLADE!!!!!

I was wondering what was going on with this thread when I saw the title. I had never heard it pronounced any way other than Bo-ee (like Joey), and couldn't beleive you didn't know how to say it. Turns out I didn't either.

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie, (boo-EE)
he was a bold adventurin' man.

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie,
Battled for right with a powerful hand.

His blade was tempered and so was he,

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie,
he was a fighter, a fearless and mighty adventurin' man.

CLOSING THEME:

Adventurin' man. Adventurin' man.

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie,
he roamed the wilderness unafraid

With all the might of his fleeting blade,
he fought for the rights of man.

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie,
he was a bold adventurin' man.

Jim Bowie, Jim Bowie,
battled for right with a powerful hand.

His blade was tempered and so was he,
indestructable steel was he.
