I am luke warm on the ASHBM design but I have not held one and could be persuaded. I want a BM but unsure if I should go new, hold out for future offerings or go with a earlier model. I am a hiker, backpacker and outdoorsman. I know its a tank but if I know Ill be processing a lot of wood, ill pack it in. I can read the specs but looking for opinions from those with experience
How do you rate the ASHBM compared to other BMs? Not just for use but overall?..thx!

If your willing to hike with the weight of the ASHBM, perhaps you should consider a NMFBM? I own one and it's quite a comfortable knife to use.... Heavy but comfy. No experience with the ASHBM but I've read that certain people find the handle less than comfortable for extended use....

With its straight handle, the ASHBM is the most comfortable Busse for me, along with the ASH-1. I absolutely love the thing. That said, I haven't chopped anything with it yet. In addition, there was someone on a previous thread who experienced some pinky pain and possibly a little vibration while chopping.

Garth or Jerry, is there any reason to believe the ASHBM might have more vibration while chopping than other large Busses like the FBM? I ask because I'd like to put this idea to rest, if it hasn't been put to rest already ;-)

For casual backpacking I'd much rather have a B11. I still haven't ordered an ASHBM yet though because I have several other mistresses and large basics. I'll probably order one anyway eventually or grab one on the exchange. I'd love to hear a comparison with the CGFBM.

My sterile ASHBM should be on its way soon which will be my first mistress. This year at Blade show I hope to buy a NMFBM so I'll try and do a comparison soon after that.

Well other than RobStanley's video -- I haven't really seen any videos that put the ASHBM into use, let alone compared with other Battle Mistresses. However, theoretically it has been discussed at great length. The flat grind (which bites deeper) + the swing velocity (made possible by the weight distribution and handle) make for a blade that has the potential to be one of the elite choppers. In the same company as the NMFBM, 1311, and MOAB.

Finding the perfect balance between weight, grind, weight distribution, ergos, and swing velocity -- can be tricky. Each of the blades I mentioned above have an advantage over the others in one or more of those categories. The ASHBM along with the NMFSH, are two blades that really blend those categories together seamlessly. This is while they are considered 2 of the most versatile and balanced big blades. However, you will find others who justifiably argue that weight/performance ratio is what reins supreme. Will, is one of those people -- I think -- which is why he's such a big proponent of the Basic series. Basic 8 will be along soon ;)
