How Do You Sharpen A Gut Hook??

Just a fun question I suppose. I have never used one but have wondered about wether I'd like to make one. I think they look cool and no doubt functional for those with not much field dressing experience. I have often wondered how do you resharpen the thing.

For me, I'll stay with a simple drop point. I'd like to make one though. How does the user resharpen it well??

if I had to sharpen one would pick up ceramic or diamond round rod(such as the little pen ones offered by Gerber or EZLap) and sharpen it right pu. if you somehow let it get HORRIBLY dull, might start with a round(ie chainsaw) file and move up, but it tends to be hard to find round files for a reasonable price range in betwen the grits of a chainsaw file and the "grit" of the ceramic/diamond rods, so this wouldn't be very cost effective.

Yea, it almost appears to me that it is more of one of those things you buy once and when it dulls you throw it in drawer.

I do almost all my sharpening with an Eze-Lap diamond rod , if the gut hook is at least 1/4 " that would work fine . However I would strongly suggest that you learn how to properly use a knife then you wouldn't need the gut hook.

Can't tell you how many times I've been asked if I can make a gut hook. I've always responded politely, but always held back the question of why. I guess I don't mind the dirty work and know I've gotta get both hands in there eventually. This sharpening question has always stopped me from complying with the request. Never asked if they could sharpen it once I made it. Just sounded like a nuisance edge that would never look pretty once sharpened in the field once. Guess I'm kinda partial to the clean lines of a simple drop point hunting blade.

very carefully.

You can cut a thin strip of belt and put it in there upside down, but mostly I just stick them in the buffer with a freshly loaded wheel.............very carefully!!!

Yea, I wouldn't want one for myself either. I'll take a drop point for field dressing. And, I can easily see were a buffer would be super dangerous on one of those. I guess if there was a simple way for an end user to resharpen it it may be worth making. Seems more like a novalty to me. A leg zipper would be more pactical, I think.

Thanks.

Howdy There..!
Gut Hooks...don't make them any more. Two years ago, as Mr. Mayo said about the buffer, I almost lost the end of my thumb from trying to do that "one more tiny spot" buff on a gut hook. Resharpen with a dremel tool or chainsaw file.

Later "Possum"

You can slot the end of a dowel and put silicon carbide sandpaper in the slot to sharpen the gut hook.
I do a lot of hand finishing as I don't want it anywhere near the buffer.
