How do you sharpen a recurve with a stone?

I have an Emerson Mini Commander, and I have only large square stones. How can I get the part of the blade near the handle sharp? I seem to be hitting only the top half of the blade. Any ideas? Should I just go get a couple of diamond sticks? I'm trying to get this thing up to my standard, but am having a hard time. It is my first recurved blade...

Use the corners of the stone, don't do it with waterstones or you'll cut off the corners.

I don't sharpen a recurve blade using stone. I use sharpening steel (sharpening rod) combined with stropping against cardboard. Should bring the edge sharper than the factory edge.

Diamond ovals or spyderco profiles are some of the best tools I have used for re-curves.

What they said. The tri-sided rods look cool and the spyderco profiles are great, definitely worth it. I have the sharpmaker and the rods in it are great, though as far as the setup goes for the sharpmaker itself....it could be a bit better. Takes some getting used to.

Just don't forget to strop the edge. Use leather or cardboard. If you haven't had the experience to sharpen knives with rod, you will likely rolled edge. Remove the burr by stropping with both materials aforementioned before.

I keep forgetting about using cardboard for stropping. Have to give it a try.

Another idea is to use a mouse pad and abrasive sheets. Work out to be fairly cheap depending on where you buy and how many. Though probably not the best long turn investment.
