How do you sharpen knives?

Hi everyone, I've been a Glock shooter and never thought about knives until I got my first Spyderco. I just recently bought a BM mini pika and I'm seriously thinking about getting a sharpening system. What kind of small, mobile system should I buy? And are there any instructions for this? Any good web sites? Any help would be great!

Hi Powerball
Get the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204. It's easy to use - comes with good instructions and a video demonstrating its use - and will keep all your knives razor sharp. Had mine a couple of years now and wouldn't part with it.

Another vote for the sharpmaker. There are a lot of guys here that can sharpen a blade with nothing more than a peice of sandpaper, but if you're not that adept (like me) a sharpmaker will keep your knives very sharp very easily.

I've ordered a belt sander. It's a cheapie but I think it will work for me. I want to put a good convex edge on many of my edged instruments. I have been using a Sharpmaker and it is good, but it won't easily put a convex edge on.

IMO, the Sharpmaker is the best basic/quick thing going as long as the knife comes with a blade geometry that is within or near the angles of the stones. They are great but if you have to remove more than a little material you can be there a long time.

If you want to spend some more money you can get the diamond rods to go with the Sharpmaker and add about $60 to the cost.

I chose to add an Edgepro to my sharpening arsenal. It's a more complex system and not really convenient for doing touch ups but my process is to set the edge using the Edgepro and maintain it using the sharpmaker. The Edgepro is arguably the best complete sharpening system on the market.

Unless a blade is severely dinged up or I decide to change the angle it may only see the Edgepro once in it's life.

The Sharpmaker may be the best 45 dollars I've spent in years. It keeps everything I own razor sharp... Come to think of it, the Sharpmaker keeps all of my relatives and most of my neighbors knives sharp too :D

I enjoy playing around with japanese waterstones, but for somebody who just wants to keep his knives in top shape, I would recommend a Sharpmaker + 220 or 320 DMT benchstone.

I can dull a 2x4.

Since I found a Sharpmaker in a 2nd hand store (for $12.50  ) I have no problem bringing my steel back to hair popping sharp.

If an id10t like me can do it............
