how do you sharpen spyderedges?

I just got a Pacific Salt with serrated edge. It is my first knife with serrations like this.

I have a Sharpmaker and some other stones. How do I sharpen this, when the time comes to sharpen? There seem to be two types of serrations -- wide ones which look easy, and narrow ones which look small and hard to sharpen.

Any input appreciated. Thanks.

I used to sharpen my serrated knives just the way Sal shows in the sharpmaker video - corners only and slowly, just on the sharpened side then a swipe or two on the flat side to knock off any burs.

That method works well, but it just seemed to me like it was not getting all of the parts of the edge evenly. So, now I use the rods freehand and work on each curve and point individually. This takes a little more time (actually a lot more time) but I really like the results.

I sharpen them one tooth at a time on the sharpmaker.

I'll have to try it, but the narrow teeth seem like they'd be difficult for the rods to sharpen. I guess the rods' shape makes it easier than I imagine.

i've always wanted to know.. is 30 or 40 degrees better ? serrations don't take microbevels do they??

Cheers,

Like like my esteemed Spyder-brother Michael Cook I sharpen mine most of the time the very hard slow way. Get a set of Spyderco 701 ceramic files. Then take the radius that will fit the individual serrations. It is time consuming but the results are almost scary  . Now if you elect to do it the fast way like SAL demonstates in the 204 Sharpmaker video. Then watch the video at least 2 or 3 times and watch carefully the angle in which he drags it and pay attention to the how he deburrs the other side. Those 2 steps are very important.

i've noticed if i take a dull spyderedge and run it a 30, until it's cutting well.. then run it at 40 that it's super sharp again? is this the same concept as taking your knives and running them at 40.. and every once in awhile run them at 30 then back thru the 40 (as seen in the 204 guide) ???
