I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now, but ...

I can freehand sharpen pretty well now, but I started out using a DMT Aligner system. These types of sharpeners let you keep a consistent angle.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

I suspect that this thread is going to be sent to the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment forums soon.

But to answer your question, a lot of us sharpen our own blades, but I suspect the majority still sends their knives to others to get sharpened. I learned how to make my knives sharper than new by reading various threads on these forums and trial and error.

Bad advice. Those KaBars can stand on their butts and hurt someone.

Now that's funny right there.

I "touch" my blades up myself. When they get really bad and need professional attention I take them to the only local knife shop I trust to sharpen my knives.

Start with some cheap soft (53-55 HRC) blades, free hand on oldschool flat stone. After about 10 times, with the neccecary frustration you will get some kind of feeling for it.

Once you masted the technique to make it sharp enough to cut standing paper, you can go Sharpmaker (if you think you might need the upgrades, go for EdgePro) or Crock sticks.

You need to learn to sharpen. To me having a knife and not being able to sharpen it is like having a car and not knowing how to put in gas . You are not gonna be able to put a razors edge at first but with the right equipment a little study and some practice anyone should be able to put at least a utility edge on a knife. Try the spyderco sharpmaker system and read some of the tutorial's in the Maintenance forum and when you feel ready by some bench stones and practice on some cheap knifes.

Buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Unless you get really bugged on hair splitting edges, it's all you'll ever need. And it comes with an instructional DVD.

Either get a sharpmaker, or look into the mousepad convexing method. Both are pretty easy to learn.

Generally speaking, I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker for my folders and the mousepad / sandpaper technique for my fixed blades.
Then I'll hit the blade with a leather strop.
