how do you store your fixed blade knives?

I have a "knife closet" that is about 8' tall yet only 14" wide, with shelves at 14" spacing. My knives are stacked in there on top of each other. I would prefer to have some system such as see-thru boxes, or smaller shelves, or racks so that I can store my knife out of the sheath, yet adjacent to the sheath so I wont lose the knife/sheath match. I would need to or three "stacks" between each shelf.
Any ideas?

Most of mine are kept in the original boxes; boxes are easier and safer to stack than loose knives. And it's an easy way to keep the knife, sheath, paperwork, and other accessories all together.
Not all knives come in boxes though, so I keep many in locked Craftsman tool chests. I use a rubber pad and velvet cloth to line the drawers and protect the knives from scratches and dings.

You should consider a gun safe if your knives are customs or otherwise valuable.

I put mine on a display shelf. I don't have any kids in the house so leaving them out is not a problem. It's nice to be able to see them all the time.

My I Izula, Bravo necker and a souveneir knife are in a locked display case on my wall. With my other fixed blades I am a bad boy and they are in their leather sheaths on various articles of furniture in my room. When i get my truck my KABAR is going in the center console.

Go to Target and take a look those plastic storage boxes that come in all shapes and sizes. They sell some flat rectangular ones that would work very well for storage and they are see through so you can tell what's inside looking through the sides. You can really stack the hell out of them in those boxes and you won't beat up the knives. Keeps the knives dust free and keeps any moisture out.

All of mine are stored in their sheaths reguardless of the steel or the sheath material. I have yet to have a problem here in the great northwet, even with 1095 being kept in my car.

I keep most of my collection in stacking storage cartons. Some customs are displayed on a shelf, others fit into a collector's cabinet, a few are in the gun safe, even more are in various drawers throughout the house.

Sterilite brand 5 drawer system. 2 10" X 12" X 2" drawers for my folders and 2 10" by 12" by 8" drawers for my fixed blades. My larger fixed blades (10" and up) that don't have boxes are stacked and only touch sheath to sheath in an X pattern. I took the bottom drawer out because my Sterilite is placed over a heat vent next to my bed.

A triple layer plastic grocery bag. I just oil the knives occasionally and they don't rust. I keep all folders and fixed in the knife bag. Only time they leave is when I clean or resharpen them, then they sit on the table until I am yelled at about them.

Long term storage of knives in or with their leather sheaths is not a good idea. Aside from attracting moisture, leather gives off various things that will damage the knife over time.
Knives that you clean frequently, or only store for a short period of time, are much less prone to the problem.

I have a couple of Sterilite plastic containers for mine. I don't have any fixed blades that are mint; all are users, a couple might have some collector interest, but they're still users. Other than that they just get oiled & stored until use.

I do have a large Himalayan Imports CAK that sits by the bed, mainly because it doesn't fit in anything convenient.

Most of mine are on my beds headboard. Makes it easy to fondle them in the middle of the night.

My hand made / custom knives are hanging on the wall in their sheaths. My production / folders are stored in a drawer. I've considered dulledge2's idea with the magnetic strip for my EDC rotation but haven't acted on it yet.

I store my knives in one of the gun safes in the den. I just lay them side by side on a shelf, and add another shelf as needed. Monthly, I bring them out, wipe them down, inspect, and put back in the safe.

When I use one, it gets cleaned, polished, and put back in to storage.

all of mine are users. I won't spend money on a safe queen.
