How do you store your kitchen knives?

Right now I store my knives in the kitchen drawer along side the silverware. I've got a block that fits in the drawer so they stand upright and do not touch eachother or anything else.

I'm looking to move them to the backsplash wall using a magnetic strip. The only ones that I've found in the local kitchen stores have exposed metal that would be touching the blade when the blade is on the magnet. Does this pose any concerns? Are there ways to avoid this?

I'm not a huge fan of counter top knife blocks but if I find the right one I may be interested. I've got one kithcen knife with a ~ 14" blade so most knife blocks wouldn't fit it.

How are you guys storing yours? i'm looking for ideas.

My Furi's came in a wooden box so I keep them in there, my others are in a drawer with sleeves for the better ones.

Block.
If you're that concerned about the blades touching metal, you can try to place a thin strip of venier on top of the magnetic strip.
On the same note, its not that hard to make a wood block. If you know a local carpenter, I'm sure he could make one fairly easily that would hold all your knives.

We have a counter top wood block for a relatively cheap knife set. My wife bought a nicer Santoku that she was banging around in the silverware drawer so I eventually made a kydex sheath for it as my first kydex project.

I'm going to suggest the knife magnet. Blocks breed micro-organisms and they're virtually impossible to clean. Plus, you're more apt to strike the edge putting your knife in a block than you would be on a magnet. If when you place the knife on the magnet you make contact with the back first the edge will not touch anything becasue of the bevel. If you are going to use a block, use inserts that can be removed and cleaned.

Don't worry about the metal ones. I use metal magnetic strips (IIRC they are from IKEA, they are also black coated, probably to make them tactical :D) and they seem quite fine.

Butcher's block, and, in the drawer I keep them in empty paper towel rolls so the blades don't get dinged up.

I store them in several large kitchen drawers. Each is in a protective case. At last count, there were well over 50 of them.

I keep mine in the boxes, I only take them out when I'm using them. The boxes can't possibly harm the edge, and if I need to store them out of sight, I can just put them in a drawer. Safely.

Keep your magnetic rack away from the sink. The moisture will condense on the magnet. I have several knives that don't stick to a magnet. My Cera Titan Santoku Titanium knife sits on its side on the counter with edge facing away from the user. It doesn't have to be dried. It can sit in a puddle of water or fruit juice. When finished with it, I rinse it, shake it off, and lay it on the counter or cutting board. My Stellite paring knife is a folder. It can be put away wet and sits on the window sill. My Zirconium Carbide ceramic Santoku is stored in a sleeve in the drawer. It can also be put away wet and is used mostly as a finishing steel. My other ceramic and titanium knives have their own cases and are stored in a knives only drawer.
