How do you store your knives?

Ok I would like some advice? I am arelatively new to knife collecting and as you are all aware a knife collection seems to grow at an alarmingly fast rate - as my bank account dwindles :) Up until now my knives have sat in a spare dresser draw, mostly in their boxes and some small folders in a sack-up pouch. It is getting to the point where i need a storage system. I don't have the cash or space for a fancy glass dsiplay case. In any case I am more concerned about storing them safely to avoid rusting, etc than putting them on display. I have heard people talk about Pelican boxes. Just wondering how and where you guys store your 'preciouses'? Thx

Some folks here are high on Gerstner's wooden tool chests. they are really beautiful, made for storing delicate engineering tools, calipers, and medical tools. My knives are not worth a box like that. My wife just got a simple little "valet" for me for Father's day. It goes on the dresser top, and has space for my cologne, change dish, watch, pen, etc. The one small drawer holds 6-8 4" knives, so I use it for my EDC rotation (for now :D ).

I picked up a Gerstner Collectors chest on sale for $300. They had factory seconds for $250. I _love_ it. Before that I was using a bladeforums.com knife bag. It was OK, but they quit selling the 4-pocket insert which bummed me out. :-(

I bought my son a nice oak toolchest (Gerstner copy) at Sams for $90. Quite nice, but it split in 1/2 after a couple weeks (green wood?). I see they have them in stock again. I'm tempted to buy myself one -- seems like a GREAT deal. Not sure what I need it for, but it's such a good price... :-)

Hi DR... You might look into buying a large plastic rifle case, with the foam rubber inserts. I use it to store all my auto's in the open position, and it works great.:)

I have 10-12 laying all over the house, new, favorites, fun etc. All the others are slathered in RustFree, stuck in sackups and sealed in ammo boxes with a dessicant.

Hmmm...

I toss them up and stick them in the ceiling...it makes for an interesting conversation piece when people come over. It's an old trick I learned to do with pencils back in grade school...

"Ouch, stop hittin' on me dang it, I was just kidding!" :p

Seriously, I wipe them down with a Sentry Solutions Marine "Tuf-Cloth", and then wipe them down a second time using a Chamois and Ren-Wax before putting them in zippered soft pouches prior to locking them in the gunsafe. :)

One firearm and one nice knife are left out for me to "play" with at night...any more than one of each and the others get jealous... ;)

Hope that helps....

That's a pretty cool idea! I have a nice hard case designed for a two-piece shotgun. It's about 1/2 the length, but wider than a standard rifle case.

That would have been perfect. Might make a nice travel case though. Hmm..

I use a large fishing tackle box, that opens on top for misc. goodies, and the front has a one piece door that opens up. Behind this door is four seperate pull out containers, with adjustable dividers...cost me 25 bucks at Sportsmart, and it works really well...
