How do you store your knives?

As I accumulate more knives. I think I need to think about a decent place to put them. Up to now I've used wooden cigar boxes but that is becoming impractical. Ideally I'd like one of those Gerstner chests but thats mucho dinero. I'm looking for safety (two tots), protection (for knives), attractive display.
I'd like to read your ideas.

You could probably find a Gerstner used for a decent price, nothing beats them for knife storage ;)

Mine is from the 1920's and was given to me covered in gold paint and grease, but it restored nicely!

I bought a Homak Model 3660 Gun Safe / Gun Cabinet from my local outdoor store. It was about $90 on sale. Here are the specs:

Holds 8 Rifles or Shotguns
Foam Barrel Rests
Foam Covered Floor Cover
1 Shelf For Handguns & Valuables
2 Bins On Door For Additional Storage
2 Key Coded Anti-Drill Locks
Size 21"W x 10"D x 55"H
Weight 80 lbs.

I have 3 rifles in it, 2 handguns, ammo for all guns, about 25 knives in their boxes, another 50 pocket knives in three of those plastic organizers for fishing lures, and about 5 large fixed blades.
I still have a couple of square feet of space left to fill up.
I think it is a nice cabinet for the money, and it will fit nicely in the back of a closet.

I soak the steel of the knife in CLP and leave wet out of the sheaths in a huge plastic bin thats water and air tight.

Have had knives sit this way for years and only need wiping off when ready to use.

As soon as I have cash to do so, I'll be making a locked front on my shelf. Already have a dozen clear "crystal" spyderco displays, may need another dozen soon.

As it currently stands, I have my folders in a locked wooden box, and my fixed stacked beside it... On the top shelf in my room, about 5' off the ground with nothing around it to climb up.

Good question ! Having a nice display is great , But i dont have room for anything.
I keep all my knives in them plastic ammo cases . They say they are air tight but I would not bet on it . When I get some extra cash I was going to get some of that silica packs that soaks up the water from the air just as a backup for each ammo case. I should also oil them up but have not got to that yet ! Lazy Me . You can stack them and keep a small lock on them also. Would be good to keep out the children. Just my thoughts.

I keep my folders in a roll up from Smokey Mountain, or should I say several rolls. They stay in a drawer with my fixed blades but I don't have any little ones to worry about. The only little one that I have to worry about is my baby who is nearly 19 yrs old, 6' and 300 bls. He has a nasty habit of making mine thing his. Gotta love dem kids!

Assuming that you have taken care of each knife, oiling etc., I bought some lockable metal handgun cases lined with egg crate foam they have a pretty good key lock and are a nice green color made by Stack-On company. Mine came from the Sportsman Guide catalog. Hope this helps. be safe mjmcdowell

I display my EDC's and neck knives and folders on two magnetic strip holders mounted on the wall of my office. They look better than the wall strip of kitchen knives that I have mounted in the kitchen.

Large fixed blades are stored in an old ammo case of 81mm mortar rounds that I got twenty years ago.

I'm a big fan of Plano Style Tackle Boxes, they come in tons of sizes and configurations, more than you can count and all extremely affordable. Also many of them are lockable.

I am using a Gerstner tool chest with felt lined drawers.

I promised myself that my entire collection will fit in this chest and not extend beyond it.

Time to get a second chest .....

I have so many knives, and guns that when I would leave the house I was so paranoid it drove me nuts so I invested in a large(72"X36"X24") gun safe. I don't really have that many guns at 23 but do have over 200 knives, and my wife being an LEO(law enforcement officer), and coming home telling me how many home burglaries she goes to in a day I just could not stand it anymore. Even my next door neighbor got hit a couple of weeks ago, and he is crying the blues. I actually mean we as Luana as her own collection of guns, and knives too have many that are not replaceable, and whether the value is great is not as important as not being able to replace them that a safe I felt became a must. Also another reason is the fireproof protection it provides.
I realize a lot of you say a safe is not needed but that safe cost me $1200, and I have that much in 2 of my knives alone so that is really cheap insurance in this day, and age.
I did not realize how much I needed it or how many knives I had til I got the safe, and started putting them in there but after so many years they collect when they are all over the house. Now I have them in one central place right in my living room where I can get to them easily, and don't worry when I leave the house anymore.
I not saying everyone needs a safe but if you have any kind of collecton you should a least invest in a small one, and anchor it down so it cannot be stolen easily.
I am sure some will call this a rant but I put this off for a long time and just as guilty as many, and now if they burg my house they will get the electronics, etc. but won't get my irreplaceable knives. Home furnishings are replaceable, and home insurance will cover that but unless you get extra homeowners insurance they won't cover your guns, and knives. For what they charge for the extra insurance you could buy a safe in no time.
Also one last thing about storage of my knives I go to gun, and knife shows, and buy those cheap nylon knife pouches, and store them in those so they don't get scratch, dinged, etc. Did that even before I bought the safe though as it keeps them out of the dust, and not drying out, and needing reoiling so often.
Hope I did not come on too strong but I guess that is what happens when someone in the family is in law enforcement, and you see so much burglary going on in your town, and neighborhood....
Just my .02 cents rounded off to a buck two fifty:)

Interesting idea, crucible! Have you noticed any problems with the blades becoming magnetized or causing any difficulties with magnetism-sensitive items like mechanical wristwatches or personal electronics?

Let me know what you think!

No.

These magnetic strip holders are like the ones you see being sold in kitchen stores to hold chef knives and paring knives.

They come in lengths from 1' to 2', and have between two and three magnetic strips on them to hold your knives. The magnetic strips are embedded into wood blocks that are screwed into the wall.

I find the two strip models suitable for blades under 4 inches in length, three strip models are best for longer blades.

Don't have any little ones, so I don't have to worry about any safety issues. Some of my real "pretty" knives are kept in a oak/glass top coffee table that I made into a black-felted shadow box. It holds about 25 knives. The other ones are scattered about. Some strapped to packs, some in the garage, a lot in drawers, a couple in the truck ....hell, I need some more storage too.

I store em in box in a Rubbermaid shelve unit (don't know what else to call it ;) ) However, all the knives I carry are either on my shelf or on my nightstand.
