How do you store your knives?

At the moment I have all of my knives sitting on the shelf at the top of my closet. I am a Bowie enthusiast so I have a handful of them and I am thinking about putting up some pegboard to hang them from. Display cases seem too impractical to me. Maybe I can get some better ideas from all of you.

Mine are in a steamer trunk, and most are kept in their original boxes. I do have plans for something more organized and secure - a locked room, with storage shelves and a lockable Craftsman tool chest.

A full-sized safe is not possible due to the weight.

Mine live in a largish floor model (would hold 500 cigars) glass lidded humidor when not being carried. It has both stacking compartments and drawers. Of course I don't use the humidifiers in it but rather a couple of renewable silica de-humidifiers to keep the moisture out. This way the knives can be displayed, kept in a low moisture environment , and the humidor locks to keep fingers away from things. you can often find these for under 150.00 on ebay and if you consider what you have invested in your knives ( at least for some of us) the cost is minor.

of course Gerstner Collectors Chests are very nice as well...just costly...

Peg board is convenient and will accomodate change and re-arrangement. If you are considering the metal "pegs", consider Plasti Dip to coat the "pegs". It gives them a rubbery, non-scratching, non-skid surface and comes in clear finish and several colors.

If I were to build a pegboard setup I would more than likely keep them all sheathed (even though it would look much better out of them... hrmmm..) I dunno, I am undecided.

A display of sheaths and handles??? You might as well stretch a belt accross the board and hang the sheathed knives from it.:thumbdn: Knives are about the blades. Show the blades.

Open knives hanging precariously from a pegboard? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. I hope you secure them to the board in a way that they won't fall if jarred.

If I use the hooks they should be fine. If I have doubts I will use some rubber bands or something similar to hold them in place.
