I keep my machete and my Becker on top of a tall bookcase. I have both sharpened and don't need to make an emergency run to the hospital because one of my granddaughters got curious.
It depends - if I am storing them long term, I generally wipe them with a little oil and keep them in a wooden box in an upstairs closet since it is generally humid around here. If I plan on using one within a week or so, I just oil it and keep it free of dust on an upper shelf. My machetes always get rinsed and wiped down because heavy vegetation like bananas cause discoloration of the blade within hours. A piece of PVC pipe can be flattened for a blade guard if you want something that will prevent you from getting cut while you store or move it.
You can even use PVC to make a storage tube you get an airtight space for using desiccant.
