How do you tell the steel?

I was just wandering if anyone knows how you can tell
what type of blade steel (ATS-34, BG-42, S30v) a sebenza
has if you dont have the paperwork from the factory.
Like if you were buying a used one and the seller didnt
have the birthday card. I know my small 21 is s30v but its
not marked on the blade anywhere so if I didnt have the card
I would not be able to prove it.
Anyone know?

if you take the knife apart there would be an "S" on the blade for S30V
it is underneath the handle, the only way to see it is to take the knife apart.
 
You can also tell by the letter and number under one of the Ti slabs if the blade doesn't have a S on it. If it has a S it's always S30V.

No, Look on the inside of the handle and there is a date stamp, After you know the year it was made you can look on the sticky notes at he top of this page and see what steel it has.

Sebenza Blade Steel Timeline

First knives were ATS-34

Switched to BG-42 October 1996

Switched to S30V January 2002

No it would be blank on the blade instead of a S on the blade but the way to tell would be to check the letter/number under the slab and them look at the CRK timeline thread in this forum to see if it matches the dates when BG42 being used. If it doesn't have a S it's probably either ATS34 or BG42 depending on when it was made.
 
That letter inside the slab determines what part of that year it was made in. I can't remember if it's a 1st b 2nd c 3rd or it it goes to d 4th.

A slabs made from January-April
B slabs made from May-August
C slabs made from September-December

So A99 would be made in say February of 1999; B03 would be made say June 2003; C09 would be made say November 2009............It goes like that, just examples !
