How do you think this Benchmade will measure up to the 940?

I'll give one to my brother in law for Christmas if it ain't such a prize.
Seems like a decent knife to carry in critter country.

Looks like a great knife to me. I've wanted a regular 710 for a while now. I'll get one soon.
The 940 has been on my wish list too. The 710 seems to be a bit sturdier, if that matters.

710 is larger, tougher, and I like the G10 better.

The 940 has better blade steel in my opinion, but I don't like the aluminum scales.

It's an L.E. version of the famed 710. Trust me if you hang on it to it long enough you'll make money.

The 710 is a larger knife and a more "tactical" knife.
The 940 is slim, elegant, "people" knife.

These are two of Benchmade's most popular models, you're not totally delusional. ;)

Thanks for your reviews, Zippo. Pretty informative stuff.
Nice guitar stuff, too.
Now let's hear you play some Scott Joplin on your axe.
Maybe I'll start a youtube thingy and we can share some ideas.

I think this knife will be an excellent investment for you not just in how much money you might make (which you will have to keep it mint in box in order to get maximum payout) but mostly for its usefullnes. If you did a little searching on the subject you will find that the 710 is probably the most famous and loved benchmade of all time, or maybe the AFCK, but anyways its one of the best ever. This model you ordered has a new steel called M390 which just started showing up in production knives here REAL lately. I have never used it but it is supposed to be a very good steel. Definately up in the ranks of S30v, D2, 154cm.... IMO the only negative to this knife is the size and thats personal preference. The blade is 4" which is bigger than I like to carry everyday, you might be surprised how big it is unless you're used to big knives already. But hell the thousands of lovers on here cant be wrong can they?

Just wanted to make sure that you know that they will not be shipping the knives immediately though. They won't be done until sept.

I'm aware of the wait and I did do a little research on it.
Seems popular, but I wasn't sure how many limited edition scenarios are really in demand.
Figured it was a relatively safe gamble.
Can't loose too much on a knife like that, I'd assume.

Glad you ordered both, which I would've recomended. Each are very different from one another, the 940 is considered a gentleman's utility knife. Light and very sturdy the blade length and design please many. Although the aluminum scales can scratch and scuff over time, the anodization is very good and it will look good for a long time unless it's dropped or placed with other things in the pocket like change or keys...

The 710 is a very unique knife/design. It was the first Benchmade I came across a number of years ago at a friend's home and I had to have one, actually I own three. Combine a nearly 4" recurved blade, with slim and grippy G-10, and in most Benchmade afficionado's books you have the original Axis classic knife...and definitely worth owning.

For anyone, IMO, these two would be the cornerstones of anyone's Benchmade collection.

Get two of them one BK one satin, same number if you can, matched pairs sell better.

I suppose the pressing question is: did you get the Limited Edition 940 in D2, or the standard S30V model? :)

I ordered one last month too when they first appeared on the site, mostly too try out the blade steel in a model I also wanted to try out, and to compare to the spyderco Military I have on the way. I plan on getting a 940 as well as soon as I have the money for it, probably in D2 since I don't have anything in D2 and already have 2 in S30V.

both 710 and 940 carry much smaller than their blade length might lead you to think. very slim, low riding and great blade to handle ratios on both. for me it's more a matter of the slight recurve on the 710

What's M390 like? Is it worth the price tag? (Like, maybe S90V, M4-grade stuff?)

That is probably still an open question.

The only available Benchmade knife in M390 I am aware of is the recently offered 755, so there is not much experience with the steel as offered by Benchmade.

Ordered two of the M390 bladed 710 models, myself, since the 710 is a great design IMO.

BTW - The 940 is noticeably smaller than the 710, a feature some may like for carry but I found to make the 940 less enjoyable in use.

I have the 710 in Black D2 with serrations. Good weight-comfortable. Well made. Good strong blade. Keeps a decent edge (for D2). It's one of the knives I EDC and will likely have for a long time.

When this comes in, I may hand my D2 version to one of my sons.

Does any one have any data on the edge retention and grain structure of M390?
