How do you treat the tiny rust spots on your becker knife?

Hey, i recently bought the BK9 been enjoying it immensely but .. after a few days it already showed some rust spots on the grind and on the Becker logo though.
How do you guys go about those? i chose to just oil it nicely and leave it be.. is this dangerous? i don't plan on using the knife to eat food so you don't have to tell me about tetanus. i am just worried that if i leave them be they might damage the blade further is this true or can i just oil it up nicely and leave it be? :)
 
I always use a "rust eraser". They are so convenient and effective. They will dull a polish, though.

I live in the Buffalo NY area. SALT city in the winter. My Power Wagon is an 08'. It has no rust. I bought the professional application system & undercoated the truck myself. I do NOT re-do it every year. Just touch up the wheel well areas. If you pay to have it done, they use about 1 qt. I used 5 qts in Nov/07 when i did my truck, as soon as i got it.

Just keep a small rag soaked with it & wipe it down when done for the day. My knives are all stored in rubber maid containers, in the damp basement, for more than 10 years now. No rust issues at all.
 
Rust can not be cut with an acetylene torch, it can not be welded, it has very low toughness, tensile strength, and is hard to paint.
Airborne particles don't taste very good either.
I'm all caught up on tetanus shots, I think.
Rust never sleeps.

Make sure to wipe the blade down after use. I wipe them down with mineral oil for storage. Small rust spots wil not spread after wiping with oil.
 
If you are going to plan on using the knife for food prep, only use non toxic treatments. As mentioned already, mineral oil, or Carmex type lip balms work. Carmex stays on the knife for a very long time. A small tube of Carmex stored in the sheath also is a good fire starting aid as well.
 
Don't worry bout the coating it'll come off adventually and it show the knife was well loved.......
 
I just use mineral oil. A paper towel and mineral oil on surface rust is usually abrasive enough to remove it if you scrub hard enough. Or not...oil over it and it'll patina. deep rust is another issue, but this just sounds like surface rust, no biggie. Keep it oiled.
 
This method of cooking your BK2 for 2 weeks in a chiminea will not help with the rust but definitely did an awesome heat treat as edge is extreme, rain tomorrow but you will see, just need a clear sunday as 6 days a week for me on the job front, just use and if perfection and retention of a pristine blade is for you buy another brand as all Beckers seem to get used even the NIB backups my experience anyways

This cracked me up - I grew up in Rochester where Jaguar specifically will not honor their rust warranty (Monroe County exclusion)....I'll have to check out your suggestion, though - I live in coastal NH (yes, NH borders saltwater) and I've been all about maintenance for along time, but it gets tough when one has a lot of steel that gets used and some of it infrequently enough that, well.....rust happens. Been using Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner (beeswax and mineral oil) but....it's not as long lasting as I'd like, though at least it's food safe.

OP: scotch-brite and some preventative (non-toxic if you're using your blade for food) will remove then keep those rust spots at bay. A scotch-brite and a little Bon Ami (or Barkeeper's Friend) also will work wonders...but you still have to thoroughly dry and then apply something (like Howard's) to keep the rust from creeping back in. Constant battle.....but worth it, IMO.
 
When i use em for food, I just wipe em down good with a paper towel first. I ain't dead yet @ 53. On my truck- axles have some rust but not the body. I sprayed inside the doors/fenders/cab lowers/bed/above wheelwells. It never hardens, does not conduct electricity. But it sure does attract dirt. I get filth working under my truck but i don't care. I just got sick of watching my hard earned $$$$$'s rusting away. It will make some rubber distort though, like door weather strip.

They use it on all the snow plows around me, before, during & after winter, to keep them from rusting away.

I pretty much use only 2 rust preventatives anymore, both of which are non toxic and safe if ingested. For short term on working blades, I use coconut oil. Prevents rust and tastes good.
Also in summer I rarely get out. I usually rub raw beeswax on my knives, axes and 'Hawks. It puts a thick tacky impenetrable coating on the metal. Comes off easy with a towel a hot water or left in the warm sun. Or you can scrape it off. Actually the beeswax just comes off during use...

Phosphoric acid wipe. Let dry. Wipe with lanolin or BLO or random used oil :)
