I know this is a question that has been thrown into other threads but I just wanted some input from the crowd as I was doing a little maintaince on some folders today. What kind of oil do you guys use on you OT type of knives, (carbon steel). Ive been just using 3in1 oil all along but its a bit messy and a little thin is there something a little more like silicone I should be using? and do you guys use anything imperticular on UH type of stainless blades? just thought Id ask? -Joel

I hate to say it because I don't believe it is available any more, but I use Schrade Knife Care Oil from a Schrade knife care kit. When it runs out I'll go back to Rem-oil, or any good gun oil like Hoppe's. WD-40 works for cleaning and temporary lube, but it does dry up. Good gun oil doesn't.

thanks codger Id used the rem oil before do you recommend that or the hoppes more? and you can still get the schrade knife care kits from smkw for $3.99 or on ebay in buy it now. Joel

I see little difference between the three oils. I used Rem-oil because I ran a gunshop and got a buttload of the little sample bottles cheap. I am using the Schrade oil now just because it is on my desk all the time. I suppose one could do librici..luber... slickness tests and see which of the three is better, but I don't think my knives can tell the diff. When I get an older, funky knife in, I use some parts store stuff called PB Blaster. It is sort of like the old kerosene dip my grandpa used to loosen and clean parts, but in a spray can.

Oh I know about pb blaster the company I work for buys it and we go through it like crazy you'd think they'd try to find something a little cheaper but thats good stuff. Its like my dad always says it smells bad it must work really good. and man does that stufff stink and you cant get that smell out for weeks. never know maybe I'll be doing a slick test, I'll let ya's know what the results are.-Joel

I keep several cans on my service truck. It is the only thing I've found that will loosen stuck motors in pumps, corroded nuts and bolts on equipment. I don't use it on knives very often, but it will penetrate and float out old corrosion and crud. And it does a number on wasps too. One drink and they are goners.
