How do you unload/clean a Norton IB8 stone?

Hello all,
I recently bought a Norton IB8 India stone. I boiled the oil out and have used it with water and dishwashing liquid. I think it might be loaded with steel. It isn't cutting well. It's impossible to see because the coarse side is dark brown, so I might be wrong. Can it be cleaned with Barkeeper's Friend and a toothbrush? Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Thats a good stone and worth cleaning. Do you know its date?
BarKeeper's should do it but I'm merely going by what some have posted as this topic has been written here a lot.
I've has good success using Break Free clp, apply and scrub with a wire brush. Then wipe off. DM

If using the Bar Keepers Friend, do so with some care. The oxalic acid in it is pretty aggressive, which is why it works so well; it attacks & dissolves iron and iron oxides. But, there's always a risk it'll attack other materials if left on the surface too long. Test a small spot first; wet the stone, then apply a little of the BKF and scrub for maybe 30 seconds. Then rinse it off and check to see if it helped. If left in place for more than a minute or so, the oxalic acid may begin to etch other materials in contact with it. This is why it's best to wet the surface first, and minimize the exposure time.

Boil it again. Maybe it's loaded up with soap/metal combination. I prefer to use windex or something similar for the purpose of not leaving as much residue.

I am curious, what do you mean by "Do you know it's date"?

The mfg. of Norton stones can be somewhat dated by the box and/or the ink stamp on the side. DM
