Might be a simple thing for you guys but I can't figure it out, lol! :D I figured you just put it in the drive and upload it like a cd but evidently not. I use Windows Media Player to listen to and watch things. Do I need another program for this operation?
Thanks!!

If you have Vista - use Windows Media Center (differenty than Media Player). You'll find it in the list.

Does your PC have a DVD player?

Aaaah! Vista.

I have no experience with it so...I can't help.

you need "magic dvd ripper." it'll copy the movie and can be used in itunes so you can put on an ipod

happy hunting

is it a purchased movie? if it is, you need a special program to decode the movie. there is a site that has a free version to decode it to your hard drive called majorgeeks. the program is called dvd fab hd decrypter and was listed in yesterdays posting.

Daniel, I took that pc back! No more Vista for me, least not for a few years!
Ken, yes my pc has a DVD player.
Richard, yes it is a purchased DVD.

aww man, you just brought up another reason i went to linux. for me I just insert the disc and click copy! Not for everyone I understand, but it should be. Public forums that can answer any question you have, plus its FREE!! You can't be afraid of the command line of course, but if you can cut and paste you got it.

Get these programs:

DVD Shrink 3.2 Use this to back up your DVD. You can then burn it to a DVD disc using Nero, Roxio or whatever you use to burn.

RipIt4Me with FixVTS Use this if DVD Shrink doesn't work on the disc. After this you can use DVD Shrink to back up the file to another folder. You will only really need to do this on Sony picture released DVD's. They have a greater encryption.

DVD DeCrypter You need this if you need to use RipIt4Me.

i use ubuntu....

and i use dvd shrink...

dvd shrink works the best IMO

combo it with nero or any other iso burner and your set..

cheers

As others have mentioned this process is called "Ripping" -

Here's a page of various rippers sorted by populaity -

http://www.softpedia.com/catList/7

topping the list and Freeware is -
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

followed by another Freeware -
cladDVD .NET 3.5.6

the other that's been mentioned -
DVDFab HD Decrypter 3.1.6.0

Problem with just ripping - there may still be problems actually playing the ripped files on one's PC - it may be necessary to convert the files to one that's easily playable by Media Player or similar. Most seem to convert to AVI for PC's, and possibly MP4 for Mac/iPod

VideoHelp.com is a very useful site with lots of guides -

DVD to DVD rip guides

But for files that play on the PC - probably .AVI files are most common/popular -

DVD to AVI conversion guides

Thanks guys, as usual the Forumites came through!!!!!
I'm not interested in copying dvds, not right now anyways. I don't even have a dvd burner. I just want to put some of my movies on my pc so I can cut scenes out and put em on the internet and maybe later on , when I get the software, compile my own little whacky flick. :D
I downloaded the decoder and it's working right now but man it is slow. I downloaded the ripper and when I unzipped it something aint working, it isn't showing up in my programs list. I even tried running it without saving it and it still didn't work. What am I doing wrong??

Ripping is probably a slow process because we are talking about 4+, if not 9Gb worth of data.

DVD Shrink is very good at it - that's why it's a very popular program.

Once the DVD files are on your hard disk - they probably won't play as a full movie - but in sections/bits.

That's why most people Convert the DVD files to an AVI file, so that single file will play on the PC via Media Player.
There are lots of variations on how to do the conversion - some more complex than others - personally I'd prefer one which uses the fewest programs possible and Freeware.
Link to the VideoHelp.com guide page given above.

SoftPedia.com seem to have very reliable downloads - links to the pages given in my post above.

L6,
Ken C. has got it. Download those 3 that he recommended. I'm still using RipIt4Me with "1 click". Like Vincent said, they take a good while to download. Once you have those downloaded, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter will download most movies from 2006 and back. 2007 and some Sony DVDs, RipIt4Me will handle them. It's easier than you think once those are downloaded into your hard drive.

The movie should play if you play the entire video folder rather than the individual files

I use DVD shrink and Nero Premium using those two you can copy DVDs, edit them, convert them into mpeg4, shrink them to fit on an ipod etc.

I use DVD Shrink, too, and it works great.

I use Sompy to then convert the DVD files to AVI, scaled to fit my HTC Wizard phone. I watch movies at the gym while on the treadmill. Right now I have 300 and Hot Fuzz on my phone - pretty cool stuff!
