How does a Benchmade auto axis work?

I haven't been able to handle one yet. And random youtube videos don't show it well enough.

Does the auto work just when thumbing open the blade? Or is it auto by pulling down on the axis lock?

And good videos that fully show this? Thanks!

The Benchmade/HK Auto Axis knives don't have thumbstuds or thumbholes, so you can't thumb open the blade...they open when releasing the Axis lock (via an internal coil spring), and with quite a kick!

I have a couple of these (14450SBK-701), and they're rock-solid!

I like the fact that the safety (which keeps the Axis lock engaged) is useable with the knife open or closed.

What if something accidentally touched the lock down a little bit? Would it be easy to snap open accidentally?

Not if you engage the safety when the knife is closed. Otherwise, yes, it could open...but that's why there's a safety. ;)

That must be that switch on the back that I spy with my little eye. Nice looking knife.

Benchmade is working on an assisted open axis lock. They have a prototype 615 assisted opener.I bet we won't see it till next year.

Not in my pockets. I have worn it without safety.

The axis bar is set in a deep notch. You have to pull the bar out about its own thickness aprox. 4 mm before anything goes.

Do you have an axis knife? If so, take a look: The blade is held closed by the axis pressure. To open the knife, the axis bar moves around a rounded nose at the tang. OK?

That rounded nose on manual axis knives is a Pinocchio like overlonged nose, wich forms a axis bar pocket, to set the bar into.

It is very secure. The tang presses onto the axis bar and keeps it in place until you move it back.

It won't open easily on it's own. I have carried one on and off for several years without incident. It actually takes a little force to pull back the axis lock bar on mine, enough force to keep it from easily opening accidentally.

So does it count as a switchblade or is it AO w/o being a switchblade?
