How does a MOD plunge lock work?

I don't think it actually passes through the blade, but it operates like you describe against the blade tang.

I was thinking of getting a MOD CQD MkII. Is that metal button on the side of the handle spring loaded and thus fitting into a corresponding hole in the blade to lock it in the open position? If that's the case, then it must be quite the strong lock.

Thanks

Probably like the ones on the BM AFO.

AFAIK pretty much all plunge locks work the same way. The button is basically a circle with two diameters, a larger bottom piece and a recessed middle, then the part you see. When you depress the button the recessed part gives enough room for the blade to open. When you let go a sprin under the button pushes it back up, forcing the larger diameter piece into a notch in the blade. There is a cutout on the blade tang for both open and close positions.

I have the MOD CQD and the Mk II. The plunge lock is very strong, and they both have a second lock on the thumb ramp.

Just like the axis lock, when you hold the plunge lock in and flick your wrist slightly, you can close the blade without touching it. But you need the thumb studs to open it.
