Actually it does the opposite, the Axis bar puts light pressure on the tang acting sort of like a detent keeping the blade closed. Honestly the best way is to just pick up an Axis lock and look at it, it's not a complicated design.

I know that the axis holds it shut, but when you press the axis button down, the blade does not jump out - the assist mechanism does not put pressure on the blade to open until it's open a certain amount, I'm curious how they disengage, or limit the coiled spring so that it is not constantly trying to open the blade up?
