How does Buck decide.............

Having read the thread about the new 300's coming out next year, it brought a question to mind. I'd love to hear something from someone at Buck about the decision making process that leads to a new model being offered or the reintroduction of an older pattern.

I just curious as to why/how they came to the conclusion that the new little 306 Duet would be a money maker for them.

I see folks (at least here) begging for other options that don't seem to get any attention from Buck, but I don't remember ever seeing anyone say, "Wow, I wish they would bring back that tiny little one with the scissors!";)

Joe, Mr. Keys, anyone??

Well, This won't help your cause very much but it took me about a year and a half to finally put together a set of those little ones with the scissors.

I'd imagine that the decission to reintroduce a line of knives for kids is a way to re-involve someone else other than old men

Yeah......I've been suspecting for a while that I'm a fossil and Buck has moved on to greener markets while still putting up with me and my penchant for brass and steel and real wood and old-school style, simplicity and solidity.

There is no need for anybody to confirm my suspicions.

:D

I suspect that they would do better to introduce a line with some kind of "super hero" or cartoon graphics on the handles if their target is kids.

I can just see it now! Be the first on your block to have the official Spiderman 110!

Great question, I read about the new 300’s and got pumped up for great new trappers coming out, USA made, maybe even a new big 307 and what do I find but tiny scissors? Why?

I doubt that I could even use them to cut my fingernails they are so small.

As far as the single blade 302's are concerned, I bought some of the "prototypes" just because they were new and different, but if I were a buyer looking for an EDC knife to buy, that would not be one I'd consider. Now if it was a two blade with a sheepsfoot as the second blade, in a heartbeat.

I'm sure there are other new surprises in store when the catalog is out that we don't know about yet (at least I hope so!).

Dealers may get their catalog before they are shipped to BCCI to be sent out. If anyone who visits here is a dealer and gets a 2011 catalog, you will make many friends if you scan the new knife photos and descriptions and post them here for our visual corruption.....

Total speculation.........

"Cut to the Buck Board room", where a meeting has been called to decide on next years knives.

The meeting starts and the VP's are all there with the COO, CFO and the big P. At the start of the meeting they are all fidgety each one wants his teams ideas to be selected. After two hours of discussion and no final decisions, they call for the marketing director for more statistics.

Now armed with the latest sales & marketing information, the group continues to debate.....fast forward three hours later. The decision is to do what they do each year at this time. All of the ideas are put into a hat and a few are pull and put into production....LOL.

Sorry folks I just could not help trying a little humor on this topic. No one from Buck is going to answer the question that has been asked in this thread. So you will be left with your own imaginations. Each year new knives are selected and rolled out; some will be happy and some will not. Buy what you like and shy away from what you do not like.

I hope there are a few 100 series fixed blades with some cool steel and stag handles. If they are not in the catalog, then I hope they are on the BCCI SO list;). Hay you can't fault an old fossil from trying to get what he wants. Hay it's Christmas time!

Dear Santa,

It's just me again. How's it hangen in the NP? Have you made many "sick" toys for all of the good little girls & boys? Well, you know what I'm going to ask for again.....because......I ask for the same thing each year. I want a new Buck knife, not just any old Buck knife you see....uh....I want a Buck 100 series fixed blade with S30V, or BG42, or ATS-34 and Santa please remember I like stag.

Thank you

I think what many of us forget from time to time, is the fact that there is another gender that lives amoungst us....that's right, WOMEN!!!! Perhaps Buck makes some new model choices based on what a woman would like....incredible amount of potential buyers...if you market what they like....I know for a fact..there is 1 woman that loves the new 306...and wants 1 in every color.....in my own home ;)

I'd forgotten about the "other" sex, (must be my age).

Maybe Buck should start another division and call it Doe Knives! :D According to 110Dave, that would be a good brand for the 112 to fall into.

I want a Buck 100 series fixed blade with BG42....clip......and Santa please remember I like stag and elk and desert ironwood and KOA.

I paraphrased a bit.

This has been a hoot to read this morning. I hope everyone is getting as big a kick out of it as I am. I relayed the info to all the ole farmers that I go to coffee with down at the Loaf and Jug--you know, the one that advertises, "Eat our chicken and get gas!" I had shown them the yaller 'andled, single bladed 301 I picked up and several of them like the idea. No decision to make, one blade'll do it all. Of, course, they all bring their pocket knives and hunting knives to me to be sharpened. So, someone likes the single shots. As for the scissors, we decided that a 110 with a pair "war plars" would be handy for fixin' fence. I was thinkin' tin snips, myself, but wire pliars wouldn't be bad.

Today is my birthday, so one of them ole timers gave me a Buck 133 that belonged to his step Dad, who's been dead for 30 years. That's the Buck sharpening kit, just so's you don't have to go get a catalog. Not used much and the oil can is even still full. By golly, it is gonna be a great day!

Best wishes from Colorado, y'all, Jack

Happy Birthday Jack.
Scott thanks you have converted me from my own thought process. Now even I can think of a few people this new 306 will be given as BUCK gifts to, my own sweetie uses my BUCK 301 to cut coupons when we shop now I know what to use them scissors for.
Bob.

Everyone is almost correct; it is very secretive and mysterious how we select new products. The boardroom scenario was how we USED to do it, but like any good business, we have had to move into the digital/computer age. After we used the boardroom process for a while, we advanced to using a dart board with all fo teh diferent model possibilities. The great thing about that was, if you practiced your dart throwing, you had a better chance of your prodcuts being selected. We have now move to the video gaming level; we each have a character and all of the characters fight each other to the death using your suggestion for a new product. Yeah I know, how did the pocket knfe with scissors win...that person also had the new Hoodlum survival knife...never had to use the scissors :-)

Seriously, we do consider a great deal of information and options as we decide on which new products each year. We try to provide a "mix" that will appeal to a large cross section of the market, market being everyone from knife enthusiasts to the average person, women included. Being a business, we try to come out with products that will continue to grow our business and products tht we are proud of. We do miss the mark on occassion; it happens. But, I think we are doing a better job in the last few years of providing a good cross section of products that appeal to many people and are successful. We would love to put out more new products every year, but we have limitations on resources.

I know not a lot of substantive info here, but in a nutshell we look at a lot of trends, feedback from consumers, dealers, even our warranty info.

I being a woman don't like small little tiny knives I'm more for the medium size. A Buck 112 is in that list. :)
