How does LAWKS work?

CRKT advertises a locking system called LAWKS that they claims makes the folder almost as strong as a fixed blade. In particular I am looking at the Ryan model seven that has a liner lock and the LAWKS system.

How is this different from a standard liner lock? Pictures would be helpful. Also does it work?

If you've ever seen the Gerber Covert Applegate, then you've seen the LAWKS. Basically, there is a small lever located on the thumbrest, which you push forward and causes part of a metal disc to slide between the liner and the side of the handle. The lever is part of the disc.

It is designed to prevent accidental closure. No folder can be as strong as a fixed blade, but the LAWKS does give you some sense of security, especially of you tend to twist the knife when using it. The 2nd gen Gerber Covert Applegates have the same safety feature, but the lever on the Ryan, Point Guard and Crawford/Kasper is better.

To add to El Cid's thoughts, the little disc that slips between the lock and the liner/handle, is supposed to prevent the lock from sliding off the blade tang, to the left. It is a very simple thing.

The CRKT KFFs and Point Guards have it too, as well as the whole new series of knives named after mountains. It basically acknowledges the biggest potential weakness of liner locks, and seeks to eliminate it.

I wouldn't be surprised if you ran a search on the review forum, if you didn't come up with a good close-up picture of it.

In addition, it deploys in a very natural fashion. As you grip the knife in a saber-grip position, your thumb automatically pushes the LAWKS button forward and the device prevents the liner lock from disengaging.

It may not be the "be all and end all" situation, but it seems to work quite well.

I did search using LAWKS as key word on this forum and found no drawings... but from some of postings, I found this link

Does this work better than the Benchmade Modified Liner Lock (with hollowing out the tang of the blade to 'catch' the liner lock?)
