How does Microtech get away with this?

I was browsing their offerings & they all look very cool but one thing stood out to me. Their steel. They basically say "we'll use the steel we have in stock". That threw me for a loop. I couldn't buy a knife (especially a $500+ knife) without knowing what steel I'm getting. It just makes me scratch my head. How do they get away with this? Has anyone bought a knife from them & was disappointed in what steel they got? I've never seen another company do this. I'm not trying to rip on them. They make some really nice knives.

Are you trying to buy directly from them? If so, I am sure they would tell you what steel they are currently using for that model when you decide to buy. And any dealer carrying their products is going to list the steel for a particular model on the sales page so you will know when you decide to buy. In any event, I have never seen them use anything but higher end steels.

I was on a dealer's site when I seen that the steel wasn't listed. I mean I guess I could call & ask what steel is used, but I just found it odd that it wasn't listed. Here's the note on KnifeCenter:

  • Please note, blade steel cannot be specified as it can change depending on availability (information from Microtech)

I don't care much for Microtech's designs anyway, and this combined with some models being made in China, I've steered clear. I still want a Jedi Master Hera if they ever made such a thing.

If you mean they won’t specify whether it’s m390 20cv or 204p, who cares? They’re all the same. But if they were using s35vn once in a while and then switching to m390, that might be a concern.
They mostly use M390 and 204P, which are the same more or less. I have seen some for sale in Elmax, so it is possible you get one. But AFAIK the Elmax are not as common. I haven’t heard of them using anything else in recent years
