How does Microtech sharpen their knives?

Of all the sharp knives I own, the Microtechs are by far the sharpest. The edges are all perfectly symmetrical and are all ridiculously sharp. I don't know how they get them so sharp especially with the tiny bevel they use.

I recently sent my 9 year old Mini SOCOM Elite in for service and it came back with an edge just like it was factory new again. All of my knives are shaving sharp but this thing will literally pop the hair off my arm without the blade even touching the skin.

Anyone know what type of sharpening system they use?

I haven't ever owned a Microtech, I have been tempted to buy one though. Whaleshark and Socom elite are on my short list if I do

If I had to guess, I would say paper wheels. I have visited Richard J and seen a lot of the edges that he produces, and they appear very similar to my Microtech edges.

I wish I knew, I love the sharpness of my Microtech Socom Elite. It is my favorite knife at this time, but really it is always hard to choose a favorite knife as we love them all.

I can't comment on the sharpening process, but I can vouch for the sharpness of their products. I recently purchased a Troodon OTF D/E, and it is extremely sharp out of the box!!!

My MicroTech Socom Elite, Mini Matrix and Select Fire ALL came razor-sharp!

I must have gotten a dud then, I have a utx-70 and it wasn't even paper cutting sharp. The edge wasn't even, nor apexed and was over buffed it seemed. Took me forever to get it sharp, I didn't have diamond or good ceramics when I got it and s35 is a little tough to sharpen. It does take a wicked edge though.

I know this is an old thread but it popped up in a search and thought it was relevant:

I too had a brand new UTX-70 that came out of the box so dull that it wasn't cutting paper let alone anything else. I used a jeweler's loupe to look at the edge and it wasn't sharpened well.

As for how Microtech sharpens their blades, its all done by hand on a wheel as shown in this video they made about 3 years ago (4:34 mark)

Based on the one and only mixrotech i ever owned, or will own? A slab of pine. Mine must have been made on end of shift friday, that thing was trash all around, and the sharpness was one issue.

If ya had to go back ten years to find a thread on it what does that tell ya?

Over the past few years most of the new one's I've gotten have been acceptably sharp. Had one Dirac that was dull like you are describing, but they took care of it. Sharpest one out of the box is a recent LUDT that didn't even need stropped, went straight into the pocket.

Sounds like you got it sorted, next time if you don't want to sharpen it yourself, shoot their warranty department an email and they will get you fixed up. I let them fix the Dirac because that double edge and trying to get 4 lines to a centered point was beyond what I was comfortable doing myself. Enjoy the new UTX 70, they are so small they seem almost toy like but are well built and tough as the rest.
