How does N690CO compare to carbon steel for a large chopper?

I prefer carbon but N690Co in Spyderco's Forester does a great job. There's a photo of it going through a tree in one of the "Chopper" threads.

i read the tests in knife mag. but at that retail you could buy a custom from forum maker & have money left.besides our boys could certainly do a better heat treat. i beleive the 10 in. ferhman would be superior.

New graham knives has them now for a good price.

Hi everyone,

How does N690CO compare to carbon steel for a large chopper?

N690 has performance characteristics similar to those of 440C or 154CM. High hardness, fine grain, good edge retention. Those aren't the qualities one typically looks for in a chopper, though they make a fine slicer of cutter.

I think you would be better served by making a knife that will primarily be a chopper out of either carbon steel or low alloy steel rather than N690.
