How does one apply linseed oil?

I live in the deepest, darkest concrete jungle and have never used linseed oil before. How would I apply the stuff, what type to use, and how many coats to use? I'm quite ignorant on really simple things so you'll probably have to start by showing me how to make a rag.

A while back, I got even windier than usual and posted my handy-dandy-guaranteed oiled finish tutorial.
